I'm not heavily into politics but am I right in thinking...

Democrats and Labour are left wing.
Republicans and Conservatives are right wing

Usually the middle class side with the Conservatives where as the working class side with Labour.

Now in America why is it that the less developed/poorer states like Louisiana, Texas etc side with the Republicans? I know religion plays a part but am I just talking nonsense now lol?

Becaus they are thick and have no brains so they vote for the stupidest president because cleverness of the democrats makes them feel nervous.

It's hard to directly compare our political parties to the American ones, as their political system is based on only two parties. The Democrats and the Republicans are very broad Umbrella parties which range from the centre to the left/right respectively.

You can't really call them left and right.

Labour and Conservative are, for instance centre-left and centre-right respectively.

There is a lot of overlap.

Not to mention that there is the social liberal/authoritarian stances to consider...
