Lag probs with dg834+software firewall

Got a slight problem with my dg834 + software firewall. If I have both enabled when playing games I will get random lag spikes every so often CSS just freezes and bf2 ping shoots up to 3-400. Turn off the software one and all is fine .

Now I know the dg384 has a inbuilt firewall so I dont really need the software one , how ever the inbuilt one is inbound only and I want control over what can access the net.

I've tried both sygate and zone alarm and both cause same probs , any solution to this other than shutting down the software one before playing my games?.

I always thought that the DG834 was able to block traffic in BOTH direstions when properly configured.

Sort of, yes. By default it'll block all incoming traffic and allow all outgoing. If you want to block outgoing you need to create a custom service, then apply that service into the firewall rules.

It wont however give program level control like a software firewall would. Ie, you want port 80 open so that you can load webpages, but if you get some spyware or another nasty on your PC that 'phones home' via port 80 then the firewall in the router would allow it, but a software firewall would pop up and ask you if it should be allowed or not.
