Laptop issue (blue screen dump restarts)

Hi all,

Have recently reinstalled Win XP on an old laptop, and it all went smoothly.

However, the laptop has some of those "special" buttons, to turn WiFi on, and things like that.

I wasn't able to get the WiFi working until I pressed the button to switch it on, which did the job, but shortly after triggered a blue error screen dump and the laptop restarted.

Since then, if I'm browsing with WiFi on, it randomly crashes at intervals and does the same as above and restarts.

Does anyone have any ideas please? Many thanks.

The wireless is running on Intel ProSet drivers, and is an old Gericom Ego (Celeron 1.7 Ghz, 512mb RAM) XP SP1.

OK thanks, might try that.

It was always fine previously, it's just since I reinstalled XP. Maybe there were some drivers/software for the buttons which wasn't provided with the laptop.

Change the laptop to not auto restart after a BSOD and you should see the erroring file or hardware component.

Control Panel > System > Advanced. In the Startup and Recovery settings uncheck automatically restart under System Failure.

Thanks, I thought about trying that.

What will happen then, will it just hang on the blue screen until I restart myself?

I located the 64kb minidump files that are generated by the errors, but opened them in notepad and couldn't understand much!

With any luck I have fixed this now.

Couldn't get it to boot normally, but managed to update the Intel chipset and wireless drivers in safe mode, and haven't had a crash since.

Thanks all.
