Large family car, 10K budget.

It's a lit easier to get them and car seats in and out, the boot space is better and has more configurations. It's also a lot brighter and the lower window lines mean the kids can actually see out, which entertains them and helps with motion sickness.

I'm glad someone else agrees kids want to be able to look out of the window too. Modern car designs seem to be sweeping the rear doors up, leaving the kids with a very poor view out, which seems like poor design thinking to me.

Rgds

10k will buy a low mileage 3 year old 163 titanium x.

I bought the wife one of these, I really wouldnt want anything smaller than the 2.0 in there, the 163 is just about enough for its weight.
I got hers from a franchised dealer 3 years and 4 months old, 27.5k on the clock, FSH £10250.

What are the main things to look for on the Mondeo/Focus 2.0TDCI 163bhp?
Is the 2.2 TDCI with ~200 bhp worth it, or is the decrease in fuel economy significant?

Buying without a warranty worth the risk?

I would, the superb is a lovely, comfy car. I'd only pick the VRS over it if power and handling mattered more to me (they do, but I'm not in the market for a superb or a diesel Mondeo)

The vRS will go slowly as well you know :D

To be honest though it's very tempting to get naughty with that sort of smooth useable power.

It's only 200(ish)bhp

The superb is a lovely, comfy wafter, great in the back for passengers and also massive- it's not really comparable to the Octavia

0-60 in 7 seconds and 150mph top speed is no slouch with the mid range punch that engine has.

(MORE than enough for me and my skills that's for sure).

You're missing the so what question here I think

I like the vrs, I like it a lot, but it's not some snorting performance beast. The superb is a better family car, no questions - have you ever been in the back of one?

No, I can't reach the steering wheel from there! :p

If you like the Superb, no problem.
Octavia is as big if not bigger than anything I would want (or need).

I'm 6'3" with 2 kids.

I drive a civic type R, I like hot hatches.

I wouldn't dream of driving it to France and back or regular long journeys.

I could tolerate that in a vrs, it would be very enjoyable in a superb.

Someone looking at a 1.6tdci Mondeo isn't looking for a VRS

I should imagine that would be more than tolerable in a vRS.

I had a MK1 and now a MK2 L&K both were impressive mile munchers.

Not quite BMW 5 series granted, but for the money..

Civic Type R - A drive to the shops is stressful! Plus the engine has no torque.

The mid range is where modern low pressure turbos shine, I forget what gear I'm in at times..

Again, tolerable (perfectly so, but tolerable all the same)

Superbs are lovely for the money - I suspect you've never driven or been in one?

Torque is completely irrelevant, I know what gear I want to be in for how I want to drive - in the Honda or a 2 litre vag turbo

I'm still not sure why this is relevant for someone looking at a 1.6 Mondeo....

Never driven, been in one, but honestly bigger than I would want or need.

The Octavia is the absolute biggest I would want to go.

The Colin Chapman philosophy is hard to beat!
I owned a Westfield SE as a fun car.

Infact, If I wasn't so tall I would have an Elise, but steering with my knees wasn't fun!! :D

Actually thinking about it, I would run a VW Transporter Kombi as a family bus, but my wife wouldn't go near the driving seat with a 10ft pole!
