Probably something to do with not having the AMP on all the time, in which case he can use the TV speakers only.

Personally can't see the attraction of this, there are no downsides to using the amp and better speakers bar a tiny bit of electricity, but when running a large plasma electricity consumption arguements go out of the window anyway
I have a major gripe with inbuilt speakers in TVs, especially lcd/plasmas, they all grate on my ears
