Can't find any news links, hopefully some of you can.

The Bristol council is now using a laser(pointed at the exhaust) to find the most polluting cars in Bristol. Now what is the point, they can't slap you with a fine or prosecute you or anything else. So is it me or is it a complete waste of money?
What is the purpose and what are they going to do with it.

It's been on the local news all day, But haven't said what purpose it is going to be used for.

I THINK that if a car is outside of the spec required by the MOT they can remove the vehicle from the road until it is fixed.

How on earth does a laser measure emmissions ?? I know a laser can measure fluid flow using laser doppler anemometry but I didnt think it can pick out individual constituant parts

yes so you have to take in the car type/spec and age. Then there's cars out side the system like my dodge, I have no emissions limit. This seems like a hell of a lot of work.

if you where to use it with taking cars of the road it would have to be reasonably accurate and to do that surly you need to stick a sensor up the exhaust.

AFAIK they give you a ticket, so you have to take your car to an MOT station and get it checked of and give you "x" amount of days to do so, unless of course your car is chucking out so much crud its a damger to other road users.

They can do a road side emissions test but the limits are less strict than the MOT. If you fail that you have to take the car to an MOT station.
