I've just bought a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R motherboard (haven't received it yet) which doesn't appear to have a parallel port.

I've got a really old Laserjet 4m printer which has given me years of good service. It's currently hooked up directly to my PC via the parallel port. I've noticed that there is an ethernet port on the back of the printer. Is there anyway I can hook the printer up to my network? I don't have a printer server.

Thanks,

Sounds like it has a JetDirect card.

Do a Configuration print from the printer and you should see the current settings for the JetDirect card (might be labelled as EIO or MIO Card on the print out).

You can then configure the IP address of the printer via the printer front panel.

Give it a static IP within your network.

Then on your PC (assuming it's Windows), add a new printer, local printer but don't detect and add a new port type of TCP/IP. Type in the IP address you gave the printer and Windows should find it. Pick the LJ 4M driver and all should be well.

it may be dead, our jetdirect cards amysteriosly die when they get to arround 5 years old :( (this in in laserjet 2100's and 2200's)

Ok, am making some progress.

I used to get a weird message on it "MIO not ready".. now it is clear what that means. In the MIO menu, TCP is off so I've switched it on and given it a static IP address.

I managed to ping it to which is good news. Network Magic software also picked it up as an intruder. So I at least know its on the network.

I can't figure out how to add it as a printer within XP tho. I've tried \\192.168.1.199 and 192.168.1.199 but it can't find anything.

Also tried local port and frigging it to point to the IP address - no joy.

Will mess around and see what I can find out.

[EDIT:] and if by magic I followed the instructions properly :p and it all works ok. Great result that! Thanks so much for all your help!

After all that, turns out the motherboard came with a parallel port on it.

That'll teach me to jump the gun. Nevermind, I've convinced myself that the network solution is more elegant anyway.
