What were the last cards by nvidia and ati that required no additional power like the 4890 now do etc. I'm going to get one for a friend, his power supply is shizer and i'd prefer it to be nvidia because i can't be bothered to go to his house and keep installing latest updates and add patches for him so games work. Won't hurt to have the ati one too.

your help is much appreciated.

You're probably thinking of the 9800GT eco that gets all its power from the pci-e slot. 4890s still require extra power though.

i was using it as an example as to say, 4890 requires power and i need one that does not.

9800 sounds good, thanks for that. What is the ATI equivilent? <- i think i spelled that wrong.
i think for ATI it was the 3 series don't hold me to that tho. just depends what sorta games he wants to play and what setting

Latest NVIDIA that doesn't require supplemetary power is the GT 240. I bought one of these as a temporary measure while I wait for BFG to semd me RMA details for a dead 9800 GX2. For £75 I wasn't expecting much but it has performed rather well. I've been playing Borderlands at max settings (1920 x 1200) and gameplay is smooth, even when there is a lot of action on screen. Planning to use it as a standalone PhysX card if and when BFG decide to get back to me.

It will run on a 300W PSU, has DDR5 and DX10.1 support, although the latter probably doesn't mean much to most of us.

What can I say, bang for the buck.

PS Haven't run any benchmarks but it scores 6.8 on the Windows experience index if that helps with any comparisons.

4670 doesnt require a connector.

4770 most do, but as the card barely draw more power maybe your PSU would be fine/or a partner could have made one without the requirement for it.

Other than that 9800GT is not bad.

You could use one these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-018-AK&groupid=701&catid=48&subcat=153
