Latest theory on my crashing problem

I've been having crashing problems since I've built this machine, but have never figured out why, it's passed everytest I've thrown at it. but in certain games, the whole machine will crash, screen will freeze and there's a screeching noise through the headphones.

I took out the RAM and put in the old stuff from my other machine, I havn't had a crash for nearly 2 weeks until tonight. I installed Republic commando and pretty much had a instant crash, so I switched it from dual core to single and it lasted for about an hour, but crashed.
Did a little search, thinking that the game was the problem, but a thread mentioned hard drive over heating, so I installed a monitor.

Here's the log
[03/Aug/2006 21:33:53] HDD Monitoring Started
[03/Aug/2006 21:33:53] Temperature = 57°C (134°F)
[03/Aug/2006 21:33:55] changed temperature status (from "normal" to "warning")
[03/Aug/2006 21:36:34] Temperature = 58°C (136°F)
[03/Aug/2006 21:37:34] Temperature = 59°C (138°F)
[03/Aug/2006 21:47:34] Temperature = 58°C (136°F)
[03/Aug/2006 21:48:34] Temperature = 57°C (134°F)
[03/Aug/2006 21:51:34] Temperature = 58°C (136°F)
[03/Aug/2006 21:56:34] Temperature = 59°C (138°F)
[03/Aug/2006 22:03:34] Temperature = 60°C (140°F)
[03/Aug/2006 22:04:34] Temperature = 61°C (141°F)
[03/Aug/2006 22:04:34] changed temperature status (from "warning" to "critical")
[03/Aug/2006 22:53:54] Temperature = 63°C (145°F)

That's from boot up to crash, was a little concerned about the 57 from boot up, the other hard drive sits and 42, highest it went up to was 45.

CPU always stays before 40, the GPU is at 55, but says it has a slowdown threshold of 115, I did set nvidia to log the temp but can't find where it keeps the log.

Is the hard drive the source of my problems?

63C is incredibly hot and you run the risk of serious overall lifetime loss and also the risk of failure, suggest better case cooling or some active hdd cooling. I usually squirm when my hdds are in the high 40C range.

Justintime is correct its possible you got a dodge hard disk there. May not be causing any problems at the moment but when it goes will probably loose everything on it.

First confirm that it runs that hot even when not in the case.

If it is running that hot outside the case Its most probably a hd problem and would suggest getting a new hard disk. As I have never had a HD run over 40 even in a poorly vented pc

Out of the case, it's started at 51oC, I tried Republic Commando again and it crashed within 5 minutes, temperture only manged to get up to 53oC.

I out of idea's what it could be, none of my other games are crashing at the moment, but the way it's crashing is identical to how it was before I changed my RAM around.

I dont game a lot and my machine runs fine in the summer, as soon as i install a game (COD2) and start playing it will crash after about 5 minutes and completely shut down, i cant turn it back on until its cooled down

There are a couple other things I know that can make components (like hard drives) run hotter than they should, one is when you have a cable the wrong way around (which should be pretty obvious when it comes to a hard drive, seeing as it wouldn't work ;)) the other is a faulty power supply or power connector of the power supply/device it is connected to (which in PSUs case can also crash a system in the way you mentioned, with the screech).

When I turned it on this morning, it started off at 38oC, at the moment it's sitting at 59oC.

I don't thinmk it's the sound card, I used the onbuilt soundcard at the start, but when I had all the crashing problems, I put in a soundblaster card, but it didn't solve it.
