LCDs with LED backlights?

Huh? Why did you think I was going on about the time its taking them to come out, just for the sake of it?

The ability for these to be locally dimmed was the only thing im interested in, as I thought most who knew of them would be, that's really whole point of these things tbh, it's laughable your talking to me like i was unaware, try not to be so presumptuous in future.

oh c'mon

its not hard to understand why theres no interest in this. If you already understand the LED technology in the current sets, you'll know exactly why nobody is getting excited about it. so why post that its strange ?

"Samsung’s 81 Series LCD TV features some innovative technologies. First up is the use of a LED backlight instead of the conventional CCFL backlight. A LED backlight allows the modulation of brightness to improve black levels (by dimming) and increasing the overall contrast ratio. This is a much more effective method compared to the brute force method of old where LCD panel suppliers simply increased the overall brightness to increase the contrast ratio. So, the dynamic contrast ratio is improved to 100,000:1 (the 71 Series has a 25,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio using the normal CCFL backlight)."

I believe the 81 and 71 series are due any time now, not sure if they will have the same names in euro zone though.

not local dimming though

dimming means all of them can be turned down, much like the adjustable backlight that most decent top end TVs have.

local dimming is the technology that allows you to turn the backlight off on black areas, but leave it on for the rest

and i think that may turn into OLED display-eque fiasco. Ie allways next year ..

but i want to be prooved wrong on that :)

LED's have a very good response time, so that local dimming thing sounds like it could work rather well. :)

its been demonstrated on a "proof of concept" model that cost about 8 grand to produce.

it was amazing

but it was first showcased back in like 2003 or whatever, and its allways been "comming soon"

just like "OLED" etc..

something got to come along eventually though :)

I still don't quite get what your going on about, i thought i cleared that up, i don't expect many to be that bothered about current sets or just led backlights, dimmable ones though mean lcd's will take quite a decent leap forward in image quality, they may not be out yet but that doesn't mean we can't discuss them or get more peoples interest.

The 100,000:1 contrast ratio ones surely must be though, ah just found this, though it doesn't say the model number...

A contrast ratio of the local dimming LED is 100,000:1 whereas that of regular LED is 1,200:1.
Samsung Electronics plans to apply the local dimming LED to its LCD TVs that are scheduled to ship this year.
Well i hope thats true and over here, probably sometime in 2008 for us though really.
