Leaked: A X38 DDR2 mobo possibly under £100 (inc VAT)

so what is?

it won't be one particular thing but several of the bells and whistles you get on the quality boards that will be missing:

fan connectors
less SATA connectors
6 phase instead of 8 phase
less chokes

etc. etc.

a good 6-phase always out-perform the so called 8-phase or 12-phase, you may check Foxconn boards, they are always doing great on 6-phase power.

8-phase is actually 4 phase, 12-phase is actually 6 phase, electrically.
in my view, they are a marketing trick and a mean to charge you double more than anything else.

4-phase power can be strong enough if the quality is there, i wouldn't automatically assume this board will hold a quad @ 4ghz because it's 6-phase.

ok this board will be ~100 pounds which is nice for those on a budget but X38 is targetted toward crossfire users anyway, P35 is a great chipset for those on single cards, and since when do multiple gpu peeps care about price?

another 50quid for a guaranteed good clocker doesn't seem unreasonable to me, well i never try and skimp on mb or psu. :p

our 5-phase is already good enough to hold a quad @ 4GHz on air.
not the limit yet.

well its certainly very interesting, how/who would support be done (im pretty unaware of J+W, no offence), ie country and a rough turnaround time for RMA?

looks like it'll come out just when i need it as well.

it was a tongue in cheek request :), generally on this board peeps are after long stressful prime or occt runs for stability.

i'm not for one minute saying you're boards aren't stable but that's generally what the punters will look/ask for.

can you provide any bios details yet, such as the ability to tweak CPU/NB GTL Ref and memory tweaks etc

Well i'm interested :)

Someone said about people who buy multi gpu setup's not caring about cost. Maybe that person doesn't care about cost, but I have a wife, run 2 cars that I pay insurance for, pay for the rent, council tax, mobile phones etc etc. I sure as hell am thinking about getting bits cheaper, and £50 saving on JUST the motherboard is fantastic (If the motherboard is any good of course). Take into account memory, gfx card, psu etc offers and you'll make quite a saving on those £'s savings for a decent system.

Thankyou for bringing this to our attention (marketting it on here!). I personally am interested in seeing this board as I'm looking to go crossfire (already have 1 3870).

If you'd like a test subject (and I don't mean a freebie, I mean testing) then let me know :)

Kenofstephen> Are you allowed to say what your job is at JW? Why did you choose this board to mention the board? (I assume your elsewhere as well :) )

I am so happy that you are interested to be our tester, and will try to arrange it soon. I do like listening feedbacks, record them, and make improvement accordingly. Thanks. ;)

P.S. this is the only foreign forum I have posted this board, because UK is cordial to HK people.

Ken,

In both those screen shots it says JW-IP35-PRO on CPU-Z. Is that because it does not recognise the motherboard yet, or your using a development bios? (or were those runs actually done on a P35 board?)

Thanks :)
Matthew

Could be just the BIOS, other things are wrong as well... for instance a 6 - 31x range on the CPU multiplier :P If only!

I'm very interested in one of these boards, and the £100 makes them more interesting. a lot of people don't want to clock the pants off their machines 24/7, but are looking for a sensible clock that will keep them happy.
I think these boards will offer value above other makers like Asrock Foxconn etc etc, which have very limited overclocking options.

It is only VERY recently that motherboard prices have increased so much. £100 would have been high end 3-6 months ago (for an Intel board).

I love overclocking but also love having money in my pocket to treat my wife, so £100 of my money would be heading J&W's way if they brought this board out. At the end of the day, you still get a warranty etc, just like any other product.

For me, overclocking/car tuning has always been about getting products to perform beyond what people perceive to be possible, and get great satisfaction from achieving that aim. Getting a cheaper product to match or better a more expensive product is really where overclocking is for me, and a lot of other people.

Bravo to J&W for attempting to bring X38 to the masses :)

That is actually right for that chip.

Those screens are the P35 board, he's demonstrating 5 phase power, the X38 board willl feature 6 phase power.

Thanks for the clarification Jokester :)

Interesting point about the 'marketting' of 8 phase etc. Will look into that more :)

Matthew

he's right in that no. of phases alone is no guarantee of a good design or indeed component choice.

so electrically, your 6-phase is actually 3? or is it a real 6-phase? :p

But why would you want a X38 if you're only looking for a small overclock  A cheapo P35 can easily achieve that?
