Leaving computer on for a week.

Leave mine running 24/7 only ever turn any of the pcs in our house off for maintenance or upgrades my current 2600k rig has been on since Xmas or so and only got turned off to allow a quick re casing clocked to 4.8ghz and never had a problem

I left my work computer on for 3 years whilst running folding projects. It was fine at the end too.

Did the same to my home computer when I went on holiday a while back.

i leave mine on 24/7 and have always done this for the last 10 years (obviously not the same computer , although my last one lasted 5 years before i decided uo upgrade)

Well I must admit kinda seems the norm here!

I'll be using it for webcam recording and as a proxy server. You guys definitely don't think I need to increase the fan speeds at all? System fans will go no faster than 50%. Should I not even lower the CPU max temp?

Thanks again :)

If it's stable I wouldn't change it, unless you've got time to test it thoroughly before you leave. You might end up introducing a new problem.

But I would change the power resume settings to "last state" or always on. You don't want to find you have a power cut an hour after you left and the machine's not available :)

Thanks for the responses.

A power cut would definitely not be good! I just thought faster fans would mean the PC is less likely to overheat?

Is that rubbish then?

Cheers :)

Also just to add why do my system fans show 0 RPM?

EDIT: So apparently I never connected the system fans to the motherboard. I was a noob doing this but got a lot advice on here in the process. Do people not normally connect them to the motherboard? I assume thats why I can't control them?

Thanks :)

There is really no reason why your PC would suddenly overheat. If it's going to do it when you're away then it would have done it while you're there, and there's nothing you can do about it either way.

It won't hurt to increase your fan speeds, so if you want piece of mind then do that. If they're plugged directly into the PSU then they should be on full anyway. Sometimes SpeedFan just doesn't report certain system fans. It depends how good the support is for your motherboard chipset.

Assuming your hardware is good then you'll be fine.

Do two things - set up remote access (through iTeleport for ipad/iphone etc. or Remote Desktop or any of the good remote access tools) so you can check things remotely. then set up Wake On Lan (WOL). Enable it in your BIOS and set it up on your iphone or whatever. This way if it goes down you can reboot it remotely as well and get up and running again.

And set the max temp shutdown thing as others have said. You could even set up CoreTemp or RealTemp or whatever to email you if temps start getting high.
