Im still on the look for a doggy carrier. Sick of them jumping all over my 206 seats and the car stinking of ****.

I also like to trek up to Scotland stocked up with a fornights worth of camping gear once a year, so a steady mover would be nice. Driving the 206 over 200 miles aint exactly comfortable.

I've been looking at something jap. I'm sick of my 206 breaking. I wish to avoid a friday afternooner that's been thrashed all it's life. But in general I wish to purchase a tidy vehicle, but keep the cots low.

Whats everybodys opinion on these two, what are they like to insure (21 0 ncd :s) whats the fuel like (permanent awd :s) etc etc. Im not that fussed, as they can be had for 2.5-3k in alright condition with a few extra miles on them. But it still needs to be taken into consideration.

The key for me is reliability and durability, whilst having space for tents dogs and a quickie when nobodies looking (or maybe when they are ;)).

I wouldn't mind other suggestions too, although I don't want to don my cap and slippers just yet! I'd like something with a little pedigree and sportiness to it. Automatic is a big no for me. I really despise it, for personal taste reasons.

Lo Thar!

Fuel economy, well, just don't check it, its better for your sanity that way :D

It's not great, depending on how you drive, but expect in the 20s, dropping into the teens if you hammer it. Insurance, well its extortunate. Try and get a few quotes, but I can't get quoted on a turbo with 1 years NCB at 21, you might have better luck with your postcode though.

Also note that the Impreza Wagon is just a hatchback version of the saloon, so the load space is taller, and you've got a hatch for loading through, but the floor space is no more than the saloon. So depending on the size of the dog you might struggle.

Thanks

Andi

Oh dear :(

I look at my 206's gauge and cry. It's a 1.4 and I return about 150 miles to 20 litres or so. I can get that around 200 miles and return 400 miles to a full tank. I've never had anything to compare it to however, so I don't know what works out as.

Insurance... I daren't look into it. But I really do need a vehicle like this. I suppose I'm just hung up over the Mondeo option, which is perfectly feasable. But as a car lover I want something a little more me. Sods law really. I'm paying £130 a month for my 206 insurance!

floor space is no bigger but overall volume is. which is what matters mostly :p

insurance will be fun, as a lot of scooby wagons are imports

Group 17 for the Turbo, group 13 for the Sport. A while back I looked into insuring the Audi 80 2.0E, which wasn't much different to what I pay now and that's a group 13 car. So It's hit and miss what I'll get quoted.

I might also look into the Audi A6 Avant. 2.4 SE with all the kit. I like Audis, my dad loved his Audi 80, although that was pre VAG I thing.

I'm looking to pay no more than 5k, but would love to spend less if possible. At the moment I can't stand my 206. Every journey I feel like ditching it and hitching a ride to work. I'd walk the 20 miles to work with the dogs if they were allowed at work!

My mum recently sold her Legacy Wagon. Whilst insurance isn't cheap as such it's not that bad, although I am 21 with 1 NCB. Fuel economy is pretty poor, she used to get 30 mpg out of it and she didn't exactley haul ass everywhere. It's alright to drive though, my only complaint would be the hugely over assisted stearing and lack of feedback. However it did a good job on mud and other nasty surfaces and had plenty of room for the dog as the tailgate is vertical rather than sloped like in the impreza wagon.

My only real complaints would be the lack of economy and servicing can be a bit expensive.

The legacy is a stunning car, but suffers a bit with a boost valley...

Impreza wagon is sadly ugly, but capable...

But what about a forester?

Impreza runing gear, and legacy practicality...

If you find one with lowered suspension, or buy an FSti, then you have one hell of a capable car, whilst also being extremely practical...

0-60 5 seconds, 20+mpg comfortable and practical...

And lots of lovely load space for the dog

:D

I ran the basic 1.8 na scooby estate for a few weeks (until i discovered some hidious welding and sold it quick) and the fuel economy is great, fulltime 4x4 meant the handling was great, quite unnerving that you can chuck it into corners at the alst moment and it just grips. I was getting just under 30mpg driving like a loon.

But you don't get as much storage space as you think, it's a very small estate, the extra space with the hatch is minimal.

A Forester is a bit big and a bit powerful, plus they hold their value so well they're not really maffordable in good nick it seems. Unless im not looking hard enough. Not for me anyway.

I'm looking at 2000ish Audi A6 Avant or the equivalent BMW touring, which I have no idea about. I want something that's got the nicer interior kit etc, but I don't want a stupidly large engine.

I also have a phobia of oil burners and automatics. Any reason to convert, anything particular make the diesels a better choice? I wish I could insure the quattro, seena few nice ones for sale. Also, what would be the optimum milage, although it's likely to be 70k+ on whatever I buy.

You wont be getting a 2000 Audi A6 Avant or BMW E39 5 Series Touring for under £3k, at least, not one thats worth owning :(

Whoops, sorry. I'm stretching to 6k, although 5.5k would be more ideal. My 206 is begining to misbehave. New years resolution to get rid, whatever it takes. I'd love to blow finance on a 2 year old model, but I'll stick with what my 206 is worth + 2/3k.

Well I'd personally get an E39 528i Touring for sure - but be careful with the running costs on these, and the Audi - they WILL cost lots if they need work doing on them.

as said, the impreza wagon doesn't have as much space as you would think (i own one myself so know!).

I have an english springer who happily has enough space in the boot but i wouldn't want to put much luggage in there as well. The back slopes back at quite an angle so whilst load area at the bottom is large, it narrows down quickly.

Insurance for me is £800 ish 4 yrs ncb @ 26 on a UK Turbo. cba to work out the mpg, but i get around 230 to a full tank (£45 of 97 ron) driving resonably sensibly.

Well if your cry at your mpg (works out at arond 33 with the above figures) then your not going to want see what you'll be letting yourself in for!!

BTW, you must be either hammering that everywhere you go or somethings not right. The book mpg for your car is between 40-46mpg depending on what model your 1.4 is. My 1.8 astra returns 39mpg and thats gets 50 miles of pretty hard driving every day.

That works out around 19mpg depending on cost of fuel.

Avrage 220miles to the tank, this is for mixed driving, mainly town and a few back roads, can get close to 350(just motorway crusing at 60-70) and can get around 100(fun on the back roads).

Mines at 340bhp 380 torque and is a lot of fun - can get all the family and a dog in easily :)

Take a look on subaruforester.org - loads of helpful guys on their could tell you what could be available in your price range..

Bit big?

Smaller than an A6 and a Legacy, same footprint as an impreza..

You arent looking hard enough as good foresters can be had for silly cheap money... £4-5k if you import yourself..

Mine was a peach with 62k on the clock and is very quick and handles very well since i put larger wheels with low profiles on it...

Able to carry a family of 5 (mine) plus all their cases from the airport... without removing the sub from the boot...

A very underated car.... ignore it at your peril...

:D
