i thought they were exactly the same as the lx3 except for the bundled software and superficially the outer shell.

On the d-lux3 (which I have) at least I believe the image processor is different from the panasonic equivilent and a little fancier. They were never a good value for money proposition though, nice camera but today they aren't worth it, if you're spending that much money now you're getting close to a micro four thirds body which will be far far better and not much bigger.

Apart from better out-of-the-camera JPEGs the D-Lux has no advantages over the LX3.

Certainly not anywhere near enough difference to justify the extra money. I love my LX3, make sure you do the ricoh cap mod, costs about £10 but is so much better than the standard removable lens cap.

There is no real difference, but given the choice and I'm not paying, I'll take the little red badge please....
