If anyone on these forums has the above combination, I would really appreciate it if you could take the following measurements:

- Lens hood on: from the back of the Nikon DSLR to the front of the lens hood
- Lens hood reversed: from the back of the Nikon DSLR to the front of the lens cap

Just curious since I'm looking at a particular bag which comes in different sizes and I'm looking to buy a Nikon AF-S 70-300 mm VR soon :p

Let me know if you want the exact meaurements as I have a D90 and 70-300.

A great travel combo. My 70-200 2.8 is wonderful but it is surprising how close the 70-300 gets in terms of image quality, AF speed, VR.

Sorry for the lack of update, I have been working long hopurs and staying at the girlfriends. I put the lens on and then realised I have no measuring device.

However, 140-150mm is about right from eyeballing the lens length.

It is surprisingly bigger than similar lneses like a Sigma 70-300, but more in grith than length. It certinly pays off in image quality though. I I was to shoot my 20-200 and 70-300 at 200mm f/5.6 I wouldn't be able to distinguish te photos based on sharpness. The Brokeh is not quite so clean and Pro Nikon glass has a certain shine to it, microscontast probably.
And I hear the 70-300 is evn better on full frame 12MP cameras (lower pixel ensity is less demanding and it seems the corner performance of the 70-300 is superb).

Above about 220mm it does get softer, but not to the useless levels. Stopping down at 300mm helps achieve critical sharpness. And it is not like there is much else out ther that can cover the 7200-300mm range. I doubt a 1.4TC on a the 70-200 will beat the 70-300.

The 16-85 + 70-300 make a superb combo.
