Lets fix our commoin problems with Vista

In Vista if I open Sibelius I can not close it properly. Killing the task (via CMD) also fails. Trying to shut down the PC will hang for 3 minutes before going through the shutdown motions then it will put the screens to standby and the PC continues to stay on.

It doesn't do it when running XP in a VMware under Ubuntu.

I don't expect anyone to be able to cure this.

the folder thing is unfixable... it just comes back i gave up trying... some folder stay other don't the reg fix it a temp soloution that will only end in tears :D

don't paste reg files into this forum, only link to them..

if you look at the reg file, it has a space after x number of chars, making it break..

eg..

"t\Windows\Shell \Bags]"

That is unless you use CODE as that should keep the formatting for the file. Well moreso than QUOTE will :)

I wouldn't mind help in speeding up network transfers. I've tried a few suggested fixes that google brought up, but none have increased the terrible speed. I'm talkin about 1.50mb/s here on any sized files. Really painfull.

I have the same first two problems the OP has, plus as a few other people have mentioned very slow copy/paste/transfer of files speed. These three things drive me mad and are about the other things I dont like about Vista.

since sp1 vista has run well for me, i get the first prob the op has, but learned to live with it now. really looking fwd to windows 7 sure the two issues and the network speed probs will be resolved

I like Vista, it's mostly fast and stable. My main moans are:

1. Rediculously slow handling 100's photo's on an SD card or Sony Memory stick in any reader. May be something to do with pulling in the Exif info...
2. Right-click > Send to > Mail Recipient buggers up Outlook 2007 if it's not running. Tried all the Default Programs fixes to no avail.

For those having problems with Vista constantly changing the folder views:

I have heard that this problem is because of the registry pointer being in the wrong place after XP. Anyway, here's a permanant (seems it to me anyway) fix:

1. Download ExplorerView from http://www.sdsoftware.org/default.asp?id=11214
2. Install, and Open ExplorerView.
3. Check the first item (Disallow Explorer to Auto-Detect Folder Contents).
4. Hit OK, and restart.

This stops Vista from detecting the folder type, so you will have to manually set your music, video, document, and picture folders to their views. To do this:

1. Right-click a folder you wish to customize.
2. Go to Properties, then 'Customize' tab.
3. Choose one of the pre-defined views, depending on your own preference.
4. Hit OK.
It should take action immediately, however a restart may be needed.

I don't customise views through that area, I do it via the right click>view context menu and say group all by type and sort by name or view as thumbnails if the folder contains just images for example.

Does this trick using Explorerview mean I can do as I normally do and Windows won't store it in the registry and thus try to load it form there and thus once again when the BAGSMRU gets filled up forgets older folder views that it won't forget them anymore since these settinsg are being loaded from the desktop.ini file (hidden in every folder with a custom view) ?

I installed it when I installed Vista (X64), and I haven't seen it forget any folder views yet.
This is probably because the folder view cache is pretty large.

AFAIK, the ExplorerView 'trick' just points Explorer to the correct place in the registry, as it wasn't changed from XP.
