Hi there,

Does anybody have any experience of the lexicon mc1?

I have the possibility of getting one of these and a power amp for about £500 and am mulling over my options. I have a set of B&W 301's, 101's and cc6 as my speaker set which should be okay. However my source would then be a problem and I would need to look at budgeting for a new cd/dvd player.

Ideally this would also be about the £500 mark. Any suggestions?

It's a damn fine processor, I have one. Make sure it has version 4 firmware. Be aware it doesn't have 5.1 analogue input so you won't be able to plug it into a SACD DVD player (5.1) although you can use analogue inputs. There is a way to get 5.1, you need some kind of DIY switch box (thread on SMR forum)

It's a really customizable processor.

The PSU's are well known to blow, but they're pretty cheap to repair. Off the shelf (there's a thread on SMR forum) and you could replace yourself.

Logic 7 processing is superb, it's the best sound expansion DSP I've ever heard, it can expand mono, stereo, 4.0 and 5.1 to 7.1 Basically it's similar to Pro-Logic II, but better. And it was out years before Pro-Logic II (in fact it was available on the Lexicon CP-1, which was around the time of Laserdiscs.

It has Music Surround mode, which expands to 7.1 and has different effect to Music (again expands to 7.1) Music mode definietly makes music sound more immersive, rather than straight Logic 7 (for films)

I prefer Music Surround over Music, I think the re-direction to the centre is less. Oh if can expand both DD & DTS to 7.1, with Logic 7 (film or music modes)

Awesome processor and will be better than any £500 intergrated amp you can get. What poweramp is with it - the processor is worth £500 on its own if V4.

Logic 7 as squiffy says is excellnt and far better than PL2 or DTS Neo. I think you have to go into silly money (meridian money) to get a better processor - i would snap it up for £500 !

oh one more thing, use the video output from the MC-1 into your TV, it makes setting up much easier. Download the manual and read it, there's a lot to take in. After the usual speaker setting/distance/levels I recommend disabling Re-Eq for every mode you're in. For music it's disabled by default, by for Logic 7 (film) in Pro-Logic, DD & DTS it's enabled. It cuts off centre speaker high frequencies slightly. If it sounds harsh with it off turn it back on.

Download manual and quick reference guide. For bedtime reading download theory and design manual.

thanks guys for the help, really useful information there. Looks like more money is being spent then, thank god for barclays savings scheme, or excessive bank charges as they are also known. :D

Shimmyhill- i will have to double check on the amp, from what my mate said i believe it is also lexicon, model forgotten, but this was after a few beers.

wow if it's a multi-channel Lexicon poweramp you're getting bargain of the century, if it all works. In fact he's selling it for a far too low price.

my mate works for a distributor and its for a guy who has upgraded and wants it to go to a good home and some cash for interconnects. My mate would have it, but he is all multi-room and in ceiling speakers so doesnt believe he would see the benefit and would prefer to pass it on.
