Having just been quoted in total £5k to repair my S80 that's probably worth £4k I'm thinking about chopping it in for something else, looking at Warranty Directs Reliability Index the only car that appeals to me in the top ten is the Lexus IS.

Two questions....

  • What do you know about the IS circa £10k?
  • Is the WD RI floored?

Doesn't seem to be a lot of choice in engines so probably a 2.2d

Although this is interesting :)

Known costs

Torque converter in auto box is going / breaking up £3k rebuild
Centre exhaust bracket £76.56
AC Service £99.00
Brake fluid change £77.52
PAS reservoir leaking £176.00
Lock stops worn out £55.68
Front wishbone bushes split torn X 4 £524.54
Geometry check £158.40
PAS pump leaking £490.20

Circas

Both NS wheels buckled £300?
Park assist not working £100?

77 quid for a brake fluid change? I just paid a BMW main dealer 58 quid. Almost all of those prices like massively over the top.

You could fix that car for loads less than £5k.

The parts prices for both front suspnsion arms from ECP before discounts are £103.20 each (guessing your engine and year but i doubt the price will change much).

With the 20/25 off that's both parts for £150...so nearly £400 worth of labour...and i bet they'll just replace the bush...

as Fox says ALL of that is overpriced.

AC regas should be £50-60 no more.

And for the auto surely you can get a 2nd hand one and fit that...

Lolwut? Has he priced that with a brand new torque converter? You can get a perfectly good rebuilt one, installed, for a fraction of that. I paid £600 inc. a refurbed torque converter for my 530i.

OMG £158 geometry 'check'?!

This is ridiculous!

Sounds like you don't even want to consider fixing the car if you're accepting those jokes of prices. Granted you are looking at a minimum of £1k which is a lot, but £5k is several times too much in reality.

Woah there put the pitchforks away, it was only a quote and a thought with a few more £ks from savings I could get a newer better car and the best place to get some advice would be here, must be time of the month and your all synchronised.

I wasn't having a go, I just meant that it seems you have no interest in repairing it, meaning regardless of the actual cost of repair you want a new car.
Fair play if that's the case.

Personally unless you are looking at doing stellar miles I would not get a 220,pootling round town does them no favours. DPF and fifth injector problems cost £££

250 engine is pretty bulletproof and so are the autoboxes. You might find a manual petrol if you are prepared to look around/wait. Think I have only ever seen a couple.

Known issues with the rear caliper slides seizing although that has been counter-measured (applies to both models)

If you have any questions email address is in trust.

Sorry last reply was from phone, I wanted to give a more concise account

Yes I probably could

There's 4 and they are 1.2 hours per corner I'll let you do the maths

He's about to buy a new car and scrap his as he thinks it will cost £5k to repair, its only right we tell him he's being taken for a complete ride.

No I'm thinking about selling the car as is and putting the repair money and some more towards a newer better car, maybe justifying a new car for me

But he might WANT a Lexus IS

I was sort of hoping to get some advice on the IS

Yes yes he has, I'm not going to sling a s/h ebay job on it, I do 20k business miles a year I need a reliable car at the very least there is a £1500 refurbished ebay one including fitting available

OMG £158 geometry 'check'?!

OMG your right

I thought you had a warranty, will the tourque converter not be covered under that at least?

I did, we as a family decided to ditch all insurances for this and that and bank the money, my unemployment insurance was £125 pcm the car was £36 pcm and other, however I'll give you a run down of what would have been covered

Torque converter in auto box is going / breaking up £3k rebuild Possibly covered although £50 excess and 30% parts contribution & query if they would write the car off
Centre exhaust bracket £76.56 Not covered
AC Service £99.00 Not covered
Brake fluid change £77.52 Not covered
PAS reservoir leaking £176.00 Covered although £50 excess and 30% parts contribution
Lock stops worn out £55.68 Covered although £50 excess and 30% parts contribution
Front wishbone bushes split torn X 4 £524.54 Covered although 4 x £50 excess and 30% parts contribution
Geometry check £158.40 Covered although £50
PAS pump leaking £490.20 Covered although £50 excess and 30% parts contribution

Circas

I'm not not considering the prices and if you think you can do all that for £1k, get it done for me and I'll give you £500 cash

It's more of a case of good money after bad, if now looking I can sell the car for £5k put the haggled repair costs down another say £3k then £2k out of savings I could get a fundamentally newer and better car for £2k over and above what I could be spending

The Lexus is, by all accounts, a bit dull. And the one in matte black just looks daft.

Ah ha at last thanks, I'm used to Mondeos Mazda 6's and now an S80 boring is a given, I want somewhere nice to sit in traffic on the M25 5 days a week

Personally unless you are looking at doing stellar miles I would not get a 220,pootling round town does them no favours. DPF and fifth injector problems cost £££

I'm doing 20k a year 1/2 of that is in London stop start, next year I may be lucky and be closer to home or unlucky and further away

Having a look there are very few petrols about most are dervs 220s, auto now I'm not too sure, this is the second auto I've had and second to go wrong last one (3ltr Accord Coupe) cost £1100 to fix with no warranty, the only way they would warranty it was by spending another grand for a full refurb bit hesitant now to plump for another auto athough it makes driving to and from work easier

Cheers for the advice :)

How did you let it get into such a state with so many outstanding faults anyway? Do you treat your cars like crap? There can't be any way that all that stuff has suddenly broken in the last week?

No your absolutely right that's why I'm considering getting shot, it was basically given to me last year by my Father who hadn't serviced it for 30,000 miles, treats cars like crap, had 4 Nexen tyres on it and several warnings on the dash, at the time my 54 plate Mazda 6 was getting leggy and rattly and this seemed like a decent upgrade.

I've put about 15k on it and had it serviced then I've subsequently had it MOT'ed by Volvo last month who passed it but went to town on it as above and now the auto box service indicator came on and today I have picked it back up from an independent Volvo specialist who has cleared the fault but told me the box is on it's way out the torque converter and the final clutch(?) is disintegrating.

The current IS250 is a very good car - sooo smooth, and comfortable. Easily the best looking car in the class IMO. Bullet proof build and reliability. Okay, its not the most fun to drive, but these cars are designed to munch miles from A to B with minimum of fuss. A small point but the stereo sound quality is the best I've heard in any car. If I was in the market for £10k executive saloon and doing big distances, it would be on the list possibles (primarily due to its looks and reliability) along with the E60 (which has the looks and is a better drive but does not necessarily have the same reliability). I haven't driven the diesel but its 4cyl and supposedly a bit out of place in this car as well as being underpowered.

Agree with the poster above though - that matt black one looks ridiculous. Executive saloons should never be about chavving them up. Get a normal one.
