With Gears of War releasing next week I figured I'd pick myself up a nice 26"" HDTV (im only sitting 4-5 feet from the screen) which is where my dilemma begins.

Samsung seem to have suddenly dropped the price on the LE26R74BDX to around £500

Now prior to Samsung pulling this little stunt i had my heart set on this LG 26LC2R due to the positive opinions on he xd engine with SD stuff and the apparently incredible picture on HD content.

This is where the issues start. I have read opinions on this forum and others that whilst the sammy is great with high def stuff the moment you give an SD signal even DVD's it falls apart and you start seeing a lot of noise and motion blur, now I have seen this monitor running Xbox 360 and it was gorgeous but i will be using it for normal tv and obviously freeview as it comes with it. Oh and there are the reliability niggles everyone talks about.

The LG on the other hand I havent really seen any bad comments about it, and the positives have been overwhelmingly positive (i.e Great picture, great this great that) But it doesn't come with freeview, and you guys have more knowledge of this than I do anyway so i'd like your opinion.

Now for the biggest issue.

Somewhere currently list the LG for £499 with the 5 year guarantee, and the Samsung for £650. My question with regard to this is simple, somewhere have a price match policy and provided they agree to pricematch somewhere else which should i get (£504 for the Sammy and £454 for the LG) and if not is the 5 year guarantee worth the extra £46 on the LG (as i obviously wont be buying the Sammy, my budget is £500)

are guarantees a much of a muchness and anything that goes wrong will do within a year?

Thank you very much for your help!

Sorry, just a quick note.

At a viewing distance of 4-5feet, i'd think about a 32" model if you can stretch to it! You'll appreciate the difference!! :)

really?

oh wait i've just measured using dvd cases, i sit about 4-5 dvd cases away....man im crap at judging distance.

i think at a 4 - 5 dvd cases distance away, 32" might be a bit too large. TVs look small in shops but once you;ve placed them in front of you, they looks massive!

If the screen subtends an angle of 30 degrees between your eyes, they its probably too large at that given distance.

Ok that sounds like less than 4 feet then. In that case a 26" may be better.

Are you sure you won't be using it at any distance greater than that in the future?
