Life expectancy of a new bike.

lolwut
99% of the modern diesel engines are turbocharged whereas the petrol engines the proportion is way smaller.

Just because there are a few sad cars out there like VAG with theri CVT or DSG, or exceptional problems here and there does not mean that the average modern car will go way past 100k miles without engine or transmission rebuilds.

It'll be fine assuming its serviced correctly, allowed to warm up and generally treated with respect. I would expect 100,000 miles from looked after 600cc engine.

I do exactly the same, I look for the lowest mileage bike I can get. Recently bought a 5 year old R1 with under 7,000miles on the clock, its bikes with such low mileage that makes the bikes with 20,000+ seem undesirable. Even 4,000 miles a year is 20,000miles over 5 years, which imo is not a lot of miles even without commuting.

RX8's are just about the least reliable cars ever made. You'll be lucky to get 30k out of one of those crappy engines..

That's exactly the point he was making - fewer moving parts does not necessarily mean better reliability. It was a completely flawed argument anyway as modern diesels certainly don't have fewer moving parts than petrol engines - they typically have more.

its not the engines you have to worry about, they are generally very capable with regular maintenance. it is the rest of the machine that often gets overlooked, bearings, seals, linkages etc generally more exposed on a bike than a car. but again keep things well maintained and a bike can last for just as long as a car.

a honda could handle it fine - get an unfaired one to minimise rusting behind the fairing and just wash it down with a jetwash every few days.

others like suzuki are RUBBISH build quality. Very good bikes but build quality = meh...

kwak = very good motors - bulletproof, but build quality is good but not honda/ and yam is iffy on the motors. but overall 'ok'.

Suszuki isn't great for build quality I'll agree, but Kawasakis have been bottom of the pile for a long time.

Honda aint that great on quality of materials as well. just about any bike that gets used in the winter will fur up unless you pay premium money, for a premium make, but most that buy expensive bikes dont use them much any way (and mostly not in the winter).

bullit

not trying to offend, but you are a car / bike dealers wet dream.

You cant live life in fear of the minority of cases of a vehicles failure. Do you drive everywhere simple due to a aeroplane crash 4 years ago, or not go on a boat due to the titanic sinking.

just wash it down with a jetwash every few days.

dont do this, best way to ruin any bike is the dreaded jet wash... sure, once a month TOPS, but it just seizes everything, strips protection / lube and generally turns a new bike into a shed

in winter avoid washing alltogether, just wipe over bike with wd40 once a week and jobs a good'un... come summer it'll still look like new

I use my CBR 125R in the winter and did not know this thx

Jet washed the ZX9R today and there was guy behind me waiting to do his GS1200. Jet wash is no different from any other wash, just don't use the full force of the hose on sensitive areas such as bearing or electrical areas.

Like any wash you'll want to lube your chain and re-grease any areas you've cleaned that need to be greased up.

R6 would be fine I reckon.

In august 2009 I bought a brand new fz6-n in yellow front of show your bike thread.
By august 2010 the bike has done 24,000 miles and is currently approaching 30k.
When I bought the bike it came with 3yrs unlimited milage warranty. So far al that I have had is two sets of brake bobbins because they start to rust making the bike look untidy.

Apart from that there is no rust ! Only the odd stone chip.

The bike still runs like new.

Oh and it lives outside like a real machine no sissy garage her.

I would say todays bikes easily soak up the milage
