Hi people, right here's my story!

Basically, i was working at a copier company just to tie things over until this other job opportunity came to light more, basically its my mums friends new "talent" company and i'd be working for her etc. Now, it's taken longer then expected for this company to start up properly, due to reasons as hospital visits (she's in a wheelchair), website designers client base being hacked, putting that on hold etc. I ended up stupidly leaving my job in anger and boredom of it (yes i know i shouldn't have, i'm 21, i made a mistake and i've learnt from it) so been out of a job for just over a month now.

The company is slowly starting to take shape, had a spot at the uni of bedfordshire last week at international day, to drum up some PR, well received etc. We've got interest from the BBC/ITV amongst many contacts in LA/Morocco etc who love the concept. Basically, i hear from her say once a week for meetings etc, on events taking place and the plan for the future, expenses and stuff which is all well and good, but i'm skint now. I have of course been looking for jobs, bar work the usual (getting tired of "any experience" how hard can it be to pull a pint), now my issue is, say i do get a job, within say a few weeks, i could be going to events and stuff for the other company whenever needs be, forcing me to leave that other job i've just got? I don't want to jump from job to job, as i had an interview a year ago, with a top recruitment firm, and i got slammed, as he said why so many jobs etc.

I don't get on with my dad at all, and parents constantly arguing over me now. I've told dad i left and i know i made a mistake. With this job, if it pans out the way it is meant to, then i'll be doing the job i absolutely love and enjoy, all he cares about is me bringing money in to the house.

Hopefully you can understand me.

Your post is very confusing but the jist of it is that you are waiting for your Mum's friend to give you a job when her business takes off and thats what your holding out for ?

Cant you tell a white lie and say that you have experience behind a Bar ?

Surely you can operate a till ? Have you tried looking at working in a warehouse for an Agency or something ?

Do you drive ? maybe get a job delivering Pizza's Just to keep your Old man off your back.

Have you considered voluntary work ?

Rent Boy is the obvious solution. Give your dad a freebie and he can then vouch for your quality.

On a more serious note, can't you get your mum's friend to speak to you in a professional manner instead of stringing you along and give you a SOLID representation of when you will be working full time for her? Isn't she paying you beyond expenses for your time acting as PR at these shows? If not, why not? If you're just letting her do that out of kindness, she's in for a hell of a shock when the company starts rolling and people then expect to be PAID.

Well, i work on expenses until the company properly takes off where she can pay me a salary, and then people work under me and i take a % of what they bring in and stuff, but yeah pretty much RedDanDoc.

I'm looking at temp agencys today, any good ones i should know about?

Also, i left my old job as i didn't like it anymore and sales wasn't for me, what can i put on my CV?

I wouldn't hold my breath for this future (possibly mythical) events thing to happen. You need to try and sort yourself something decent on your own.

Good luck with that attitude, yes it can be bad working in a job you don't enjoy but in the current climate a job is a job and as you say you are skint.

Also, I wouldn't lie about bar work. It'll be obvious on your first shift if you haven't done it before, it's not just pulling a pint. Can you pour real ale and beers properly? Have you actually poured lager from a proper bar font before? Can you change lager and beer kegs?

Do you know how to make a long vodka etc, there is more to it than may meet the eye. Sure it's not rocket science but if you lie about it you'll be caught out sharpish.

Windle, i know i made a mistake and i've learnt from it :)

How can i show you guys my CV for some slamming? Would like some opinions before i send it to a temp agency.

Should be there, let me know mate, would love to improve it. Really don't know how to put my last job for reasons good enough not just "i didn't like it".

Will do this from my point of view, bearing in mind I assess CVs and undertake recruitment and interviews and have done for the last few years. Being honest your CV is crap, i would have skimmed it and it would have gone in the recycling.

Will do this in sections for convenience

Profile: I’m a very active 21 year old. I am very punctual at all times, and organised for all situations. I have good inter-personal skills and I feel I am very well mannered. No matter what the task at hand is, I will always put 100% into it to the best of my ability in order to complete it. I like to be busy at all times. I can use a PC to a high standard of requirements and/or Mac, along with many applications such as Word and e-mail.

No employer will care that you are an "active 21 year old". Whole section needs reworded, this is the important section as it's the first part the employer will read. If it's poorly worded as yours is it'll get binned straight away. The main problem with this section is your career experience is varied from working checkouts to working for a film/tv studio to doing telesales. What do you actually want to do as a career, are you just looking for any job? Your CV should be tailored for the job you are applying for and the profile should cover what you will bring to the job. For reference here is mine:

"A Project Manager with a strong background in the Water, Wastewater and Surveying industries. Responsible for a range of Projects ranging from small value dayworks to multi-million pound projects for clients including Scottish Water, International construction companies and local councils. Enjoys working in a team but able to work on own initiative. Excellent Leadership skills, able to motivate and develop teams to exceed targets."

Achievements:
Grade 6 in Flute
Volunteered for a successful local charity event
Played county Tennis and Cricket along with other spots to a high standard of playing, football and rugby.
Captain of various sports teams that were football, cricket, hockey, and basketball.
Rode from London to Brighton (2003)
Built a computer from scratch aged 16 for a friend
Took part in the Blue Peter Bikeathon (2001)
Played Cricket at Lords Qualified first aider

Seriously?! These are personal achievements, as an employer I don't care if you play flute at Grade 6 level or that you cycled from London to Brighton. Take this whole section out.

Employment History

You don't need to put why you left a job in your employment history. This section should be where you worked during which time and what your role and responsibilities were. If you managed any significant work related achievements in one of these roles it can be included as well. Also what is the huge employment gap between Dec 2008 and Jan 2010. I see part of it is covered by the college course from March to Dec 2009 but what did you do the rest of the time?

Well, i worked at tesco to fill time for doing sport, then i quit sport due to injurys and such.

So i decided to do music/film hence those jobs, but most of them are unpaid, so did telesales to get some money behind me then i can survive on no pay at the start.

With regards to the gap, the course started in March, so from December to March was just doing labouring work for my friends dad to fill that gap as i didn't see a point of getting a job for 2 months.

Aiming it towards a music type job, all i can think to write within the description about me part is "Having previously worked within a music and film environment, i would like to further my career within this area. Am able to work within a team but also on my own. Will work to deadlines with ease and use own intuition to go that extra mile".

It's probably better to reference the jobs even if it's very brief so that you explain the gap than just to have a period where you've apparently done nothing. There's maybe a judgement call to be made if there's dozens and dozens of jobs in there as it might imply a lack of ability to stick at anything for a decent period but I don't know your employment history so can't say for certain.

As Windle says you don't need to put down why you left a job although I have previously had on my CV a note for particularly short term jobs that they were during a summer break from uni or similar.

Confused :s

Have a look here.

I would add in a 'Skills' section which lists skills you have relevent to the job you are applying for and put this near the top of the CV (maybe replace the Achievement section?)

So, to take an example from earlier in this thread, if you are going for a pizza delivery job then you would include the time you've held your driving licence, remark that your licence is clean, tell them you have good knowledge of the local area, can follow detailed directions and have experience in using GPS equipment etc.

Also, you mention that you qualified in first aid in your BTEC. If this is still a valid qualification then it should definitely be more prominent on your CV. All companies have to have a certain number of first aiders. I would imagine that this would be a big plus for bar work.

This is my CV so far

Skills and interests:

Guitar- intermediate and learning to progress
Penis- well endowed but wont do porn as have to start in gay so I heard
Maths- very good at maths
Video games-good at many but excels in old PES games and football manager
Football- amazing dribbling skills and shooting/passing however he is not a team player and has poor mentality and awareness to make it even in a pub team.
Golf- Very good at pitch and putt but not a great golfer. Also get bored after about 8 or 9 holes and want to go home.
Body sculpting- have studied many bodybuilding programs from Bruce Lee to Mike Mentzer and follows a superior diet which enables me to maintain a sculpted body at 10% bodyfat all year.
