Hi All,

I never normally like posting things like this, but at least its not some sob story about my misses being a hoe :)

Well I'm at a turning point in my life at the moment and I dont know what to do about it, I have been debating it for the last month, now normally I'm the type of person that it will take a few minutes to make a decision and stick by it but with this one I'm not sure what to do...

I have been within local government for the past few years (5 years) on about £21k doing 1/2 line support, server support, ASP.NET and MS SQL programming, project managing, and other stuff... dont get me wrong its quite easy but its starting to hold me back on the things that I want to do... for example new car, house, things that I want in my life...

I have have a degree in Computer Science and Business, as well as a Master's degree in Business Information Systems, my A levels, and GCSEs... I wanted to do some more training but got turned down by the body that I work for, I dont see any more perks within the job, and I'm starting to feel unsafe within the job (political change)...

I have been putting my feelers out to agencies and they only seems to be offering me aroun £24/£25k and those are doing shifts, I myself think that I'm work more then that, but I'm now wondering if I'm wrong to be thinking that... if so I dont think that an extra £4k a year is worth the hassle of getting out of a job that I can do quite easily, have 30 days holiday, and very flexible time.

Getting a job in another place (private sector) would look good on my CV as at the moment all I have done is public sector work, and I know that this can limit me when it comes to getting jobs within the private sector.

I do sorta feel like the place that I'm working at the moment is a bit of a sinking ship but I could wait for redundancy, IF it happens, but then that might not happen and its at least another 9/10 months off...

As you can see I'm pretty confused at what to do, well, very confused at what to do... especially with the turn down in the economy I would feel more safe within the public sector if everything does get that bad, am I doing this all at the wrong time? Should I wait to see what happens with the financial markets before actually committing to something?

All advice is welcome, and thanks in advance!

Hi All

Thanks for the replies...

Patience... yes it could be better at times... I just get my things done, and expect people to work as fast as me I guess...

I'm being offered jobs but below what I have been expecting, really, and £25k for night doing nights as well!!!

Swizterland, I dont see why not to be honest with you, as long as the pay was right :) you can mail me: stelly at gmail dot com

I have three interviews next week, but none that I can say I definately want without a shadow of a doubt...

Hi,

Right places? I would like to know these places please :)

I would stay if I was given training, but thats not going to happen...

Stelly

Hi Voltar...

What are you doing at the moment? I was just wondering... I also split what I want to go into either server support or web development... I'm split.

Stelly

Hi,

Also if I'm not getting offered over £25 in the northwest, how am I going to make it in London Town? :)

Stelly

well I was looking for a lot more then what I'm getting now... I have had enough with being paid nothing for doing, well, everything...

Stelly

I'm still undecided what to do to be honest with you... guess I'm going to have to think about it over the weekend...

Stelly

Thanks All :)

Stelly,

I'm from Liverpool, 2 years older than you. If you're not constrained by location I'd consider a move. The North West will be constraining your earning power SIGNIFICANTLY.

After graduating, I moved down south and started on more than you're on now. That was 7 years ago. I plan to move back up north in the future when I've built significant equity. I know many people (simple bachelors degree) on over 60K here at our kind of age.

I've never had a payrise under 15%, maximum was the latest..39%!

Hi All,

Myself and the misses are looking for a house at the moment, around Manchester, I dont want to do the whole long distance thing, and she works for NetApps in Manchester, so I dont think that she will want to leave such a good company to be honest with you...

I didnt realise that the northwest would restrict me that much, the thing that annoys me at the moment is that my boss in on around £32k a year and doesnt know half of my with an degree in Geography, go work that one out because I can't!

I have an interview this afternoon, so I'm getting ready for that at the moment, its not that much more about £24k and I would be working shifts... I will see how it goes I guess..

Stelly

the interview went ok... the company is a distrubution, just in time they called it, which means that there has to be a turn around on a problem of 2.5 hours or their is trouble...

There are no perks with the job what so ever, and it is shifts, I seemed to know more then my manager again, which I dont think it anything new to be honest with you... its the same sort of support that I'm doing at the moment, but with less users I currently support about 800 users, this company will be about 160, more money less work...

I'm not sure if I would accept it at the moment, I have to take my holidays at certian times of the year... which can be annoying with only 3 floating days...

What do you all think?

Any job offers around here? :)

Stelly

Just to update you...

I have got a second interview on Thursday 9am, I dont know what I was thinking either... they gave me a choice of 9am or 12pm was not sure, so I thought he might as well...

Stelly

Hi Guys,

The thing about it is that I dont know what I shoudl be looking for and everytime that I try for big bucks I either don't get call back, or dont get calls at all... see where I'm coming from, since I'm on £21,500 about at the moment they are asking my to justify it or say that its too big of a jump, so I dont know what to do...

Stelly

Hi All,

Second interview went ok, the HR manager was a little of an arse, playing down my experience with being in the public sector, it was quite interesting... I should hear tomorrow... I'm thinking about taking it but still looking, what do you all think about that? I'm not sure if it would be seen as a bad thing to accept a job and then turn it down for something better?

melbourne720 I have emailed you mate, can you please respond :)

Stelly

I got the job, now have to had in my resignation, I have been here five years, its going to be hard, I'm going to do it tomorrow... I dont know how I feel about it...

Stelly

Of course you're going to feel reluctant about it, you've been there for a good stint of time and you're doing something out of your comfort zone.

Your skills are worth much more than what you're getting about the moment.

You could try tell your employer than you've been offered a new job for a fair bit more money and see if they are interested in keeping you for a higher wage?

In public sector, thats not going to happen mate :)

Stelly

Handed in my resignation yesterday, both managers looked surprised to be honest with you... ah well...

Stelly

UPDATE!

Ok well I have started in this company, its good, trying to get my head around their business, car manufacturer, its all the sequencing, but it was cool to sit in a Rolls Royce the other day, and nope dont work for RR :)

I'm finding the whole getting my head around the part numbers, aplha codes etc the biggest thing that is holding me back at the moment... but I'm hoping that its just all going to fall into place soon... really soon, can really notice the difference between private and public sector, especially when trying to buy something, I mean I have to justify everything, to the point where at the moment I dont have my own computer... shocking...

I think that I will give it a year and look for something else... dont get me wrong its good here, but its not what I really want, I think that I'm really missing the whole training/ education thing at the moment, I have even started to reread my MCSE books again...

Stelly

At the moment I'm sharing a computer, not impressed with that to be honest with you, especially if I'm going to be doing some asp.net programming, but they also want me to setup a web server as well for my applications, I think that this is a first for them to have web based applications
