Just read about this on another forum, and thought it was cool so had a quick go in my room:

I thought it looked cool, thought id share :)

the idea is great but try light painting an object or at least try something that has a focal point. all im doing with that image is look at the light trails and wonder off round the image

aye, that isn't light painting - that's just light trails. Light painting would be using a long(ish) exposure and then use a light source to 'paint in' bits of the scene you want exposed.

And this is the contrary of light painting. Light "dodging"; I don't know if anyone did that before or if it's just me. You take a large (Cokin P) ND/Grad filter and wave it in front of the lens in strategic places to 'tone down' the light from the floodlight.
You need to be rather precise and use the filter just in front of the highlights, and not anywhere else.
If you don't 'light dodge', you end up with massively burned highlights.
