lighting a match off your face/stubble

Well we had some matches today (to light candles on a friend's birthday cake)and were bored in the common room.

Someone (aka me) thought it'd be fun to see if you really can light a match off stubble. I'd had a shave last night, and it was around 1:30, so i had some fairly hard stubble. I failed miserably at lighting the match, no matter how hard i tried.

I'm not sure if it was due to the lack of manliness of my stubble- because it's fairly manly, for a 17 year old- or whether it was due to the softness of my skin.

Has anyone else sucessfully light a latch off their face/ neck stubble? if so, any tips, or indeed anecdotes?

It was a cook's match, they're not safety matches I don't think.

Yep, safety matches are unlikely to work

Your face needs to be hard too, else your skin will give way and it won't work.

So are cook's matches safety matches? They did have a brown tip, came in a cream box, i can't remember the name of the brand, but it's a common one.

It will only work with strike strike-anywhere matches, most matches are safety matches

Brown = safety match, so fail.

That or somebody has been doing something VERY wrong with them, if so extreme fail.

You can also light them between you're teeth or between you're finger nails, again they need to be non-safety ones.

Erm, it's a myth caused by films from the days of westerns. You would need a face like sandpaper, stubble it not hard enough, nor is the skin beneath (if it were, I'd go to the Docs).
