Reminds me a bit of that black mirror episode nose dive, where everyone is super pleasant to each other in fear of getting a low rating from their interaction.

Thing is, in real life, most people are pleasant to each other because of the likelihood of having an aggressive or violent interaction should they carry on like they do online. On the internet, it's much easier to be a grade A **** because there are no physically aggressive or violent interactions.

Likes and dislikes, upvotes or downvotes, and all similar functionality are validations that release feel good chemicals in the brain to keep people using a given platform. It's basically like training laboratory chimps to hit the right button and receive a reward.
