My car has an LSD. This is good! The problem is, I don't actually know WHAT they are good for and what they do exactly.

Can someone explain to me what an LSD does and what their use when driving is.

In short, stops you spinning up the inside wheel while cornering, and generally makes the car more controllable while on the power in a corner.

Thanks for the replies! So, basically, an LSD aids cornering by stopping the inner wheel spinning and presumably stopping the back end stepping out as easily.

nope, it means its easier to spin the car (if RWD) as both wheels are going to spin instead of just one. If you going round a corner and floor it on a non LSD car one wheel will spin, the other will grip and all the extra power is lost on the spining wheel (just even more smoke). On a LSD car the power will go thru both wheels. It does mean that more power can be put down before traction is lost, so cornering and accelerating at the same time will inprove your speed, but when you do loose grip, you loose it on both wheel.

The are many different types of LSD so they react differently.

A lst doesn't nessecarily mean that both wheels will spin. It just means that if one wheel spins, then some power will go to the other wheel. How much power depends on the type of LSD you have.

I have a rudimentary LSD which is literally just a bit of viscous oil between the two wheels. This allows the wheels to move independantly, however it will act against one wheel spinning significantly faster than the other.
