I agree with the earlier comments that the AF on the 50mm 1.8 is far from stellar. My old 1D pumelled it into submission to ensure good AF, but on my 5D, it was seriously hit and miss. Additionally, I found the 1.8 soft until F2.5, at which it was very good for the dosh.
Personally I changed to an 85mm F1.8 which has stonkingly fast AF, is sharp from F2.0 and frankly makes my zooms like a bit pants. It's sat on my camera 90% of the time now, just means that I have to learn to walk a bit.
