What's the general consensus: when writing an essay should line/page references come before or after punctuation?

e.g.

...blah blah-di blah, (line 52) blah blah
...blah blah. (line 52)

or

...blah blah-di blah (line 52), blah blah
...blah blah (line 52).

I have seen both in academic essays and am now unsure of which way to go, advice? Thanks. :)

Use the fullstop at the end, as the reference is related to the paragraph said (From the Harvard referencing manual from university :)).

I am using footnotes.

Like this:

Blah Blah Blah.1 if you are referencing the whole sentence of what you are saying.

Blah Blah2 Blah if you are specifically referencing that 1 piece of information in the sentence.

Of course I could be totally making that up- no one seemed too bothered during my degree.

Note superscripted numbers (cant figure out how to do that here)

Just found my Uni style sheet so that clears things up. Apparently the way to go is a footnote for the first line/page reference and then all following references are to be made in the text after the full stop (unless the reference comes earlier in the sentence). Seems a convoluted way to do it but guess I have to go with it.
