Linksys Access point and repeater

I have a pair of Linksys WAP54G wireless access points. One set up as a normal access point the other configured as a repeater with its own IP address. Individually they work fine but as soon as they are both plugged in to the wired CAT5 network network I loose the internet connection for the entire network. Has anyone set these access points as a repeater? Any advice would be welcome.

I am using a Draytek Vigor 2820 router and a Netgear 24 way gigabit switch. Internet is Virgin Media using their own cable modem via the Draytek.
