Just got my Linksys WRT54G through the door this morning and was looking forward to rigging it up and running a decent router.

But i shortly found out that the feature i had bought the router for was not there. The WRT54G is known for its ability to use 3rd party firmware.

This is no longer the case hardware revision 5 of this product completely locks this out.

Now after much screaming and annoyance i said sod it and ran it anyway, but to my suprise i get sloppy download speeds, lost packets and when azerues is running it brings the router to its knees (even when running settings that have worked with previous owners of this router)

I bought this router from ocuk of course and im wondering what my options can be. Is there any chance exchanging it for a version 3 which seem to work fine and does everything that i was expecting from this bit of kit.

Cheers.

Ive got an old version 2 and its superb, tried using 3rd party firmware on it but found the linksys was still the best.

I know some people have had problems with the latest v.5 , and yeah, they have totally locked out the feature to do a 3rd party upgrade.

Yeah, the v5 G is a lobotomised one (different OS etc). Wouldn't expect any 3rd party firmware to install on it at all.

The 'new' Linux based version (eg. the same as the old one) has L on the end of its model number. Linksys decided to add 30 quid to the price for no real reason, just because they know people buy the Linux models to use the third-party firmware.

OCuk might if you ask them very nicely. AFAIK the revision number can be less or equal to 4. Chances are they don't have any in stock anymore though.

Bricked routers getting RMAed was the reason I saw them quoting.

Yup.

There is also the WRT54GS, none of the versions are lobotomised AFAIK, and it's not that much more expensive.

Unfortunately that's not true any more :(

They've supposedly just released the WRT54GS v5 which is lobotomised, VxWorks + half the memory

They've also discontinued the WRT54GL, which is nice of them.

Hmm right so there are no good linksys routers to go for. This router completely seizes up 30mins in when bittorrent is runnining.

What router do you guys suggest that would be pretty good?

Provided you don't get a lobotomised version, they're still decent. The problem's now going to be guaranteeing you don't get one.

Yeah, thats one thing i dont want. I dont think theres anything you can do to specifiy a specific hardware revision. Im so cheesed off that there was no identification that the different hardware revisions give u different performances.
