Linksys WRT54G screwed up bad

After messing with the firmware to try and strengthen my wireless signal, my router is totally up the creek. No wireless connection can be detected, and when I use a cable to connect, I can't access the router homepage.

The router homepage used to be 192.168.1.1. Trying this now just times out. Under network connections, the 'default gateway' is listed as 82.39.250.1, which is very very strange as it should be 192.168.1.1. My PCs IP address is 82.39.250.109, which isn't right either. I've tried hard resetting the router loads of times. I can get internet access just fine, but I cannot get access to the routers settings and none of my other 3 PCs can connect. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael.

After speaking with Linksys Live Chat, I was told how to master reset the router (holding the reset button for a total of 1min 30 seconds while disconnecting and reconnecting the power lead). I still have the same problem though.

If I'm not mistaken, Blueyonder (Virgin media) normally have IP addresses starting 8. It's as if the router did not exist, and is providing a direct connection to the internet. I cannot find a way to access to the router homepage, it has just vanished.

EDIT - As I suspected, when the computer was directly connected to the cable modem, ommitting the router, I get exactly the same IP address. Basically, the router died during the firmware flash, and has forgotten that it is a router. I've spoken to Linksys technical support (excellent freephone service) and because I followed the exact procedure to update the firmware, and used the correct file, they are going to replace the router, even though it is long outside of its warranty period. Nice job!

Hmmm

Interesting, I am also now on Virgin cable services with a Linksys wireless router WRTG 54G and I have the same problem.

Although I was NOt doing a firmware update it seems that the transfer from Blueyonder to Virgin may be causing a few probelms when connecting via the wireless router.

I have run the cable direct from the modem to the PC and I have a connection - connect using the wireless router and nothing.

Will try a few things and see what happens. I wonder if anyone else is having the same problems

edit

It seems that the MAC code has now changed, which is why the router could not pick up the signal. Look like I am going to do a bit more work on this

You can't just swap the device that's attached to the cable modem round.
You need to switch the modem off, disconnect the old device, switch the modem back on and wait for the lights to stop flickering then connect the new device.

Hi

I connected the cable modem directly to the PC after doing the 1 minute re-set and found that I could connect to the internet.

I then re-connect the wireless router but no connection

So I disconnected the wireless router and re-connected directly to the cable modem again, I then did an ISP check and found that the MAC address was now different from what it was earlier on.

I then had to re-connect the wireless router and re-set the MAC address in the router settings in order for it to work.

I have a very similar problem actually although it was done using custom firmware. With your encounter with linksys what did they ask for over the phone and did you have to send the old unit back?

They asked for all of my personal details. The returns department are (supposedly) going to contact me to arrange for a replacement (after sending this faulty one back first). I think they arrange for a courier to collect the faulty product.

Hi

initially not on the router, after reading the original top post I did the 90 second reset method.

I then followed the setup guide on the Linksys web site and all seems to be OK again now.

It is just strange that it was working fine one second and then nothing the next when all I was doing was surfing the web.

I had a note of my previous settings and they were cleary different to the settings that I was now having to enter. The only explanation that I could think of was the fact that Virgin Media was in the process of doing something possibly gearing up towards to the new 20MB service possibly?

Well it works again now and all I have to do now is sort out the wireless part for my brothers laptop

This happend to me as well. Correct file and it died on firmware update. A lot of other people have had the same.

ocUk wont even reply to my RMA after countless e-mails.
