Then in Tomato on the wrt54gl, you set the ip address to fixed..? Considering upgrading my mum's home connection to a wrt, as thats what I've got now on my ntl

Set the router up via ethernet for wireless. Then just log on via laptops etc wireless. It generaly has most of the setting set as standard. Its only the wireless info I set WPA / password etc.
