Hi guys,

I need to come up with a way to block Live messenger from being opened in the office.

I have already blocked Windows Messenger as this is a standard option in the Domain Policy, but I can't quite figure out how to block Live Messenger.
I know I can create a Hash rule for the live messenger exe but, does this mean that Live Messenger actually needs to be installed on the server to select the exe?

You should be able to copy the exe from any machine running the software and point the software restriction to that file to create the hash.

Could you not block the ports that WLM uses? Am I being naive here? Unless WLM uses ports that other programs that need to be unaffected surely you can find out what ports WLM uses and shut them down?

And I'm fairly sure that there is no option in WLM or some kind of util to make WLM use other ports as specified by the user, so they shouldn't be able to circumvent a port block in this way.

As far as I know the MSN messenger type stuff tunnels over port 80. Quite a few modern firewalls allow you to specifically block the messengers using their own utils.
