Living in a room where someone has smoked?

I'm a student. I don't smoke, but the room I'm considering moving into does smell of tobacco (I assume it's tobacco and nothing else illegal, although it doesn't really bother me).

Have any other non-smokers moved into houses/rooms smelling of smoke, and if so have you noticed any detrimental effects on your health? I realise it's very unlikely, but just in case.

If a room smells of smoke, is it likely to change significantly within say 6 months, if no one smokes there and I open the windows every day for a few hours? Is there anything that can be done cheaply to remove a significant amount of the smell.

Wipe the walls with a damp cloth rinsed in warm soapy water and vacuum the carpets. If you can then clean the carpets with a proper carpet cleaner.

So long as no one smokes who lives with you the smell will die away.

The worst thing I experienced was living with people who smoked a lot when it ended up smoking in the living room when I wasn't there it got worse and worse. Really don't like living in a world of smokers as a non smoker.

You need to properly wash any soft furnishings/carpets (properly with a machine and not just a shake and vac type thing).

Then you need to wash the walls and get off any nicotine.

Put a few plants in and spray an odour neutralising air freshener, it should sort things out.

Get a Cat, it will soon stink your place up more than Tobacco and you'll be completely oblivious to the stench as you'll be used to the smell of the Cat and therefore not able to smell it.

Waits for all the Cat owners to enter Thread foolishly convinced their houses don't stink of Cats... :D

Wash the curtains, shake and vac the carpet and wipe the walls down.

I smoke and i would do this anyway in a shared house as it probably hasn't be done in 10 years.

If your worried about possible health risks, just don't think about all the stains on that old mattress. :D

Haha cheers guys. The smell wasn't bad, I've defo been in less pleasant places. And the location is great, otherwise I might have rejected it based on slightly high cost. Anyone have any tips for tenancy agreements or living with other students generally?

Wash curtains, carpet clean carpet/rugs (B&Q hire out carpet cleaners which are supposed to be good) and wipe down the walls.

It will take a while though. Leave windows /door open whenever you can and in the meantime you could go a bit hippy and burn some incense or smelly candles (you can get some nice non-girly ones if that helps!)
