Living in Oxford...

As a child I was thought that all public transport in Oxford ran 5 minutes late ?

Isn't there a saying "Oxford Time" - 5 mintes behind Grenwich?

In my experience(far too vast for my liking) buses in and around Oxford bear almost no relation to their scheduled timetables. In fact every time I go for a bus which used to be daily, but thank God is now rarely, you can rest assured one has literally just gone regardless of the time.

I wrote a number quizzes for a hotel in Kenya, I made the lst question amusing (so everone would get it wrong).

Question: At what time does the 5 o'clock bus from Mombasa to Kilifi leave Mombasa Bus Station?

Answer: When it's full!

I don't think Oxford is quite as bad as that.

I'm in the same position at the moment. Started at renault a few weeks ago and have been lodging in Banbury, although I'm trying to get a place in oxford in some studenty house or something (i'm on placement).

Do you have any idea what the commute is like out of Oxford to Enstone? At the moment it takes me about 20-30 minutes depending on the route/roads from Banbury.

Banbury is ok (aside from the smells) but a bit too far away from Oxford.

Banbury is about as far away from Enstone as Witney is - I've driven from my flat which is on the north side of Witney to the Renault factory several times and it takes me 21 mins.

If you live within the ring road I guarantee you the commute will be approaching an hour. During the mornings I drove around Oxford trying to get a feel for the traffic I got stuck on the A40 on my way to the A34 (which leads directly out of Oxford up towards Enstone/Chipping Norton) and it was absolutely horrendous.

If you want to be near Oxford centre the best thing would be somewhere like Kidlington. This is a quick sub-15 min drive to Renault up the A34, and its 10 mins by bus back into the town centre.

And boom, another OcUK'er starting at Renault :) How long is your placement for? What are you doing? Are you at uni now? How did you get it?

What estate agents are you using?
Yeah I'm using Finders Keepers. Ive already paid them the reservation fee and I'm doing the tenancy application now. To be honest they have been nothing but curteous and professional with me!

Well i signed the contract and picked up the keys to my flat today, probably moving in this coming weekend - then my first day at Renault is on Monday :D

Although there are definite hints of fear, I am very excited :)

Best of luck with your move. A fair few decent pubs (and a few not so decent ;)) in Witney. Had a some good nights down there over the years. :)

I've lived in yarnton all my life and the buses are crap !

The A44 isn't bad with traffic at all realy but the A34 is And the A40 !

Witney would be your best bet ! Cowley ain't as bad as people say it is but barton is a crap hole along with rose hill and blackbird leys !

Edit ! just read the whole Thread lol !

Good Luck !

Where did you end up living mate?

Yarnton has a wicked garden centre and pet shop, ive spent many hours wandering arround there :)

Yes i was a bored student.

hehe witney is nice, i went there today, in fact my cousin owns the pc shop "ability systems" there! i live in woodstock and the buses around here to and from oxford are:
a.) too expensive (for students :p )
b.) always late unless your not at the stop, in which they drive past early..
c.) never a bus when you need to go out on the town!
