Living on a main road...do you? Could you?

I lived on a main road for two years and hated it. In the summer if you opened a window all you would hear was traffic so sometimes you couldnt even hear the tv when a big lorry went by. Large vehicles such as buses and lorrys used to shake the whole house as they passed which was very annoying too.

I used to live on a main road and it wasn't that bad. The idiots with loud exhausts who somehow think removing their bike's baffles makes up for their tiny peepee size were the worst.

I have lived next to a busy main road for 21 years. Yes you can hear the traffic quite clearly, but you will soon get used to it. I now have trouble sleeping anywhere else because I am so used to it.

The only thing that annoys the living **** out of me is the drunks on their way home from town on a weekend.

Lol, considering where you live, those drunks may be some of the most highly trained killers in the world. ;)

Back OT, my family lived on a main road for 35 years and the biggest issue for me too was the drunken louts walking home as we lived on the edge of the shopping centre in a big 5 bed house, set back in very private borders.
My mum lives there on her own now since my dad passed away and she just can't sell it, probably due to its location and the min price we're willing to accept for it.
That said, i certainly got used to the noise. You could always ensure you have good quality sound insulation in your walls and windows. If the house really is that good then i'd consider it.

Just moved into a house set a similar distance back.

Sleeping's not really an issue. By evening the road tends to have quietened down enough that it's not really an issue. From your perspective, my biggest worry would be child running out into road...

I wouldn't ever, sure you get some big houses on them and at a cut down price but the noise, the smell, the danger to children, dogs and cats, will there be standing traffic outside the house when you try and leave for work in the morning, can't park on the curb outside, less privacy.

Wouldn't be for me.

Are you sure it's not just cold feet?

If you or anyone in your family are light sleepers, or have a history of asthma, then yes I'd be tempted to reconsider. Otherwise I'd say go for it, it's not going to be that noisey at night.

If it's where I think it is (and I'm not stalking you, honest, I'm just from the same corner of Warwickshire) then I'd buy that house just to sit on the front lawn and laugh at the number of people who set off those speed cameras. And you never know, by the time you come to sell it they may have finally built the bypass I remember being talked about when I was at school there 20 years ago!

I lived near a main road for two years. It was a really busy road which was busy pretty much 24 hours a day.

It did bother my gf at first but after a couple of weeks we didn't even notice tbh.

We have now bought a house and have a train line at the end of our garden! Not ideal but just like you the house was much nicer than anything else in the price bracket. We made the decision to go for it and haven't regretted it.

However from your initial post it does sounds like you have a gut feeling that you shouldn't do it. If that is the case then you will probably be better off walking away. You should always trust these things.

As with any house purchase you should think long and hard before committing.

I rent a flat about 15m away from a busy road - it can be annoying at times but get used to it and end up not noticing the sound so much.

I went from silence in the sticks to a mouth breather infested sinkhole. We lived on the main road through the town and didn't find the noise annoying at all, even at first. I got used to it right away. The house wasn't even set back. I did make a point of having the living space at the back of the house but I did sleep at the front with the windows open no problem.

I did however always say I would never have a child there. I grew up where I could run around the street unsupervised and have fun. I want that for my kids too. The house I moved to didn't have a garden or any safe haven for a child though, I assume yours will. You should also take the local area into consideration. Is there greenland or a park nearby that you can take your daughter to etc?

I would go spend 30mins to an hour parked on the road there at peak times to see how it is. There's obviously many other positive factors about the property, it all depends on whether you're willing to spend a lot of time waiting for the perfect one in your budget, but there will always be a compromise somewhere. Good luck and I hope you figure it out.

Spent 5 years living next to a main road, 200m from a Fire Station in Bristol.
You get used to it very quickly.

Now I live in the middle of nowhere, but there is a train line running 40m from my house. The trains are electric, run slowly as they are coming into the terminus and rung about 4 time an hour.
Again, you don notice it.

Just recently moved flat, I thought would be quiet at night but it seems the road is used as main access into the city for large vehicles.

two nights in the summer it was so hot we tried to have the windows open but neither of us could sleep. Every 20/25 mins a massive lorry was going past, even car engines were pretty loud.

I lived on a 30mph main road for 12 years and wouldn't want to do it again. It was a very busy dual carriage way so 4 lanes of traffic. At rush hour it was always packed. Everyone sitting there in the que nothing better to do than staring at you as you enter/leave the house. Everyone staring whilst you do any work on the house or car, having to wait every single day for traffic to clear before i can get my car on/off the drive, the sirens, the boy racers and motorbikes with fart can exhausts on, the dirt on my parked cars especially when it rained. The driveway was just big enough to park 3 cars on and it was about 3 meters from the road. I'm glad i don't have to go through that again now i've moved. I lived in the front of the house so watching telly with the window open was not really an option but at the back of the house it was much quieter and not really that bad noise wise.
