Locate sex offenders in your area! (America)

its kind of a good and yet bad idea, good as it alerts the public to any local threats they may face from these people, but bad because on 5 seperate occasions that very system gave out details of people who were then murderd by local community members.

Dear god, I just did a search on the postcode of a girl in Wisconsin, whom I met on holiday and "saw" for three years - there are about 10 of them within 5 miles of her house! And this is a very rural area too...

Scum like that deserve to die though, obviously only if they are convicted and guilty which I assume they are to be on that list

Nothing useful you can do with this information, and NOT something I would like to see in the UK. And like I said in the other thread, dragging Sarah Payne's name into any such legislation is demeaning both to the law and Sarah herself.

Why don't we have a murderers database, a torturers database, how about a war criminals database? Its paedosensationalism gone mad!

If there were any known paedophiles in my area I certainly wouldn't hold it against the local chavs to cause trouble for them

Obviously never heard of the News of the World **** up with the Paediatrician?

Good on them genuine paedophiles that get theirs, only takes one bit of mis-information though.

so here in the UK a 15 year old and a 17 year old have a relationship and get caught, the 17 year old ends up on the register which if we had a system like the U.S. would be available to the public, he deserves to die does he? you are in no position to judge who should live and die as you know nothing of the details of the crimes in question.

what do you expect from the News Of The World and its readers...

Only in America

This kind of information, "locate sex offenders in the UK" will never be able to be established due to the human rights laws.

What's wrong with this? All this information is public record because the convictions take place in public. You could always go down to your local courthouse and seek information of sex-related convictions in the area. What's new here is that a database is being used to make it easy.

No one cared when it was hard to do but suddenly it's wrong when it's easy? It's still the same act of shaming.

...and what happens when you make a simple mistake (not ruining anyone's lives in the process) and end up a convicted sex offender? Would you like everyone with access to a computer and an internet connection to be able to get your name, address, picture and other information at the click of a button? Would you like your house petrol-bombed every other week, would you like abuse hurled at you everytime you go outside? Even if it was ten years ago (IANAL, and I have no idea how long one can be on the sex offenders register for, and for what offences) and you're a totally different person now?

I don't see this as a potential deterrant to sex offenders, and I don't see it as useful to those looking to protect their children from sex offenders ("Off you go down to the shops Billy, but watch out for Mr Smith down the road; he's a convicted sex offender" etc.).

PS. Just had a look at Los Angeles, CA and yowza! 2010 offenders in the downtown area alone? There's almost one on every street

Paedophilia in my view is some sort of disorder (several science journal has suggested that), i personally think as a society we aint doing much to shed more light on their behaviour and understanding it. Sending them to prison is a short term solution, more need to be done.

PS
I dont in anyway condone what they do nor do the above statement is intended as a support for their actions, quite the contrary. And please, before you flame me, try and see/understand what am saying thanks.

From what i've heard it's not necessarily massively popular with the U.S. Law Enforcement either, it discourages a fair few sex offenders from informing the authorities where they are (as it puts them on the public list) with the result that the problem is then actually worse for the police etc as they don't know where they are.

The idea sounds great from a politicians point of view as it "shows" they are doing something, but from a logistical point of view and the reality of it it can make things worse, not least because it gives people a false sense of security "the list says there isn't a sex offender here" which should read "we don't know there is a known sex offender here", and can lead to the public attacking people who may be on the list for urinating in public or similar things (or even for just having a similar name or living at the address on an out of date lst).

In an ideal world it would work (well wouldn't be needed), but there are a lot of problems with it.

Just from looking at a few examples it seems the information is a bit inaccurate. There are many "other" offences that actually involve children so should be coloured red. Also what does sodomy mean in US law? What is generally refered to as sodomy isn't bad in itself even though it may have been illegal at some point or another.

Woah, there sooooo many. I think the system would be very useful in the usa. Atleast we would know who to and not to talk to.

Righto. The list covers people who are CHARGED with a sex-act, not necessarily convicted nor sentenced. So even if a person is proved to be innocent, they will still appear on the list.

I'll end up on there when I get caught streaking through my neighbourhood or skinny-dippin' in the pool. Fortunately, everyone on the block will probably be with me. :D
