LOL moment @ Zebra crossing in Lakeside

Actually I suggest you do. The OP was waiting at the Zebra crossing and had not yet stepped out onto it. It's not until you step on the crossing that the car has to stop.

Either way, thanking someone is the polite think to do.

I wasn't debating the polite thing, I agree that is the proper thing to do, not like I would stress myself at people that don't. I'm pretty sure the Zebra crossing includes being stood at the side of the road, the beacons are there after all. If you fail to stop for a pedestrian then I'm sure a police officer, if he was so way inclined, could warn you for driving without due care.

Ahh ok, the polite thing was really my main point :) You could be right, the wording is about moving onto the crossing - I guess the debate would be if the side of the pavement with tactile paving was included as part of the crossing.

Again, WRONG!

Please explain more ...

The wording the of Highway Code states that the pedestrian must have moved onto the crossing ...

Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

I have to say I often (not always though) give a little wave of thanks for people stopping. I know it's the law and they have to stop, but sometimes it is a pain in the bum to stop, especially if there's no one behind you and the pedestrian could just wait until the road is clear. I like being thanked when I stop - I don't expect it though.

That's pretty much it to be honest. The Highway Code isn't actual "Law" but it may be used in a court of law as evidence to prosecute someone for driving without due-care. The wording of stepping out on to a crossing is a little obscure for me too but I think if a police officer wanted to he could pull you for failing to stop when someone is at the crossing, I wouldn't like to take my chances put it that way.

As for the common courtesy, it has already been mentioned that it is an inconvenience to stop, especially if you're the only car approaching and the pedestrian could just step back and wait a second. Like many of the "thankers" here I imagine this is what they are ackowledging when they put their hand up. In a situation when I'm the pedestrian and just one car is approaching I will often step away from the crossing and wave him/her through just out of courtesy really. I don't see the issue for the attitudes some people have, but hey-ho :)

It's very British isn't it? To thank someone for something they are obliged to do.

I particuarly enjoy how you can bump into someone in England and the bumpee will apologise for it :o :D

see what happenes when you dont say thanks, a thread like this pops up on the internet.. all he had to do is say thank you.. not get his law book out..

She's stopping for you because it's the law. It's polite to thank someone.

if i were waiting to cross the road on a section without a crossing and a driver stopped to wave me across i would happily thank them.

thanking someone because they stop at a traffic light or zebra crossing is retarded...

It's not retarded, it's just different to your point of view. It's a friendly thing to do and it's just a shame that your type of attitude to manners is becoming more common every day in the UK.

So you thank a driver who breaks the highway code but not a driver that obeys it?

so if im standing on the corner of a T junction waiting ro cross and a car is about to pull out and go around the corner but instead because im patiently waiting for him to make his move he decides to wave me across hes breaking the highway code?

im not about to thank someone for doing something only because they have to either way.... the person has no choice at a zebrea crossing or a traffic light as they are forced to wait, if they had a choice we all know 90% if not more motorists wouldnt wait

Yes, because the highway code, as already posted in this thread, advises you not to wave people across in case they forget to check themselves that it's safe to do so. So back to Basher's point...
