London 2012 Olympics volunteer roles open to the public

Some volunteers will get lucky, they will be at the correct places at the correct times and they will meet some famous people but many will get some boring tasks to do and they will hate every minute of it. You can't please everyone.

I would say the vasy majority are utterly indifferent, there may be more interest in London but most folks really don't care about it

Yep thats how i feel really...i live in London myself and quite close to Stratford where most of it will be held i imagine. But im pretty much indifferent to it really...my only concern is that hopefully the public transport will be sorted in time for the Olympics.

But do i care?? no...am i proud that London is getting it??...ermmm sort of but again not bothered tbh.

As for volunteering??...nah ill leave that to the mugs who will do it without being paid...personally if im working for something/someone then id rather get paid.

And this is why David Cameron's idea of the 'Big Society' won't be easy. In the 50s/60s everyone used to volunteer for something. Now very few do. Changing this sort of mentality will take a lot of hard work and time.

It's a perfect chance for terrorists to do what they do best..

I'm sure my dad applied to volunteer months ago but was doing something with it today

What a fine upstanding person you are in the community. It sounds ok but would they put me up in a hotel and pay for the room and expenses.

No wonder London is so messed up, does it have a community spirit? Every man woman child and immigrant for themselves?

Of course it will but me volunteering means i have to take time from work and not getting paid, which im sorry is NOT going to happen and people trying the guilt trip on me wont get very far either...perhaps in the 50s/60s things were a lot more different but we no longer live in the 50s/60s nor do we have that standard of life back then...things are expensive and i cant see myself taking a few weeks off from work to go and volunteer for the olympics as my stonking big mortgage and bills wouldnt be paid and sorry id rather not sacrifice that for what is essentially a few weeks of various athletes competing against each other.

If i wasnt working then fine id do it no problems but the fact is that im the main breadwinner in my house so me volunteering for the 2012 Olympics isnt possible.

Its great if the people who arent working volunteer as it would give them something to do over the summer months of the olympics.

Not sure about this, it's a bit of a gamble. It's 8 hours/day with a minimum of 10 days work. And you could be spending 80 hours manning the entrance gate, which isn't particularly exciting.

You fancy paying my mortgage and bills do you??...if you do then ill gladly volunteer.

If you dont then i suggest you STFU and get a clue as to what your talking about.

Funny when someone says they wont volunteer, they get jumped on. Its a free world so everyone has the right to say yes or no...i choose not to volunteer and it doesnt make me any worse as a person but sadly i get accused of not being an upstanding citizen lol...what an utter joke some people are.

there could well be worthy causes I may volunteer to help with but for me this is not a worthy cause, some people will make a lot of money from it and many will boost over inflated egos, it does not do anything for the community outside of a few areas

Applied, will be the summer I finish Uni so should be awesome if I get in.

I don't understand all this negativity, some people want to volunteer, I personally can see myself having a great time, meeting new people, being part of a worldwide spectacle, it's a thing you should be proud of if you do.

Employers will see it as a good thing too, and if you're doing nothing else, why not volunteer??

Why are they busybodys? Why do you think this is a negative thing? People want to be part of something big, something that everyone should be proud of. Why wouldn't you want to be part of that?

Would also look great on someone's CV who is looking for a first time job or has been out of work for a while, proves they care and actually want to stick in and do work.

Exactly my point...if you have the time then do it if you havent like me then why should i get slated for saying i wont. Like i said it would be great if i didnt have to work to support my family then id do it in a shot as im sure it would be great fun but sadly that option isnt open to me.

It will be a great time and spectacle for London as a whole and i can only hope it goes well, which im sure it will after seeing all the construction going on and my area getting a nice re-furb as well.

Hmm, do you work 7 days a week 24 hours a day?

Whats stopping you doing weekends or working when you get home, like you said

You are the perfect candidate, young, speaks English, knows the area VERY well so can help anybody lost, it will be the summer so the nights are long and it will be rewarding.

or that they were cynical and solely did it for that purpose, I can't see it carrying any weight on a CV

In my eyes it carry’s exactly the same weight on a CV as a uni student who has participated in extra volunteer activities, if you had two identical CV's yet one student went above and beyond to do volunteer work it doesn't take a genius to figure who's going to get the job.

Because i work 6 days a week and my day off is my day off...i DO NOT want to be working my butt off for little or next to nothing....why is that so hard for you to comprehend??. I work damn hard as it is in my job 6 days a week so me finishing work to go and volunteer is not going to happen tbqh.

Yes and if im around and people ask me then ill gladly help them in the right direction but im not going to volunteer myself simple as that and ive given my reasons for doing so.

possibly but it would be unusual where one candidate was not deeemd the best regardless of stuff like this and in that case this wouldn't help

This is the way i see it, a few people making money off people working for free. And it help to massage the figure, to make it look like it has done better than it has.

Quick edit:

To those saying you may get a good job meeting celebrities etc. Can I just say not a chance, all these types of jobs will be given to people who know people who organise it. All the jobs left will be dogs body jobs, ticket collecting, showing people to seats etc.
