London Digital Switchover 4th to 18th April

There aren't too many TVs with Freeview HD tuners, even including the ones being sold now. You'd need a separate Freeview HD box or Freeview+ HD recorder.

what is the 5th HD (freeview) channel coming online - and will it appear on the 18th?

I was under the impression the freeview capacity would be significantly freed up with analogue switch off - is this not the case?

I was on the BBC HD trial a few years ago, and thought it worked brilliantly. Ive had a humax HD recorder for some time but gutted the BBC binned F1 this season - was excellent last season in HD. Olympics should look stunning along with the Euros and Wimbledon etc

It was given to Channel 5 but they pulled out, so it has been given back to the BBC by default. However, whilst BBC Two HD will appear soon, BBC HD will disappear so they don't need that extra channel. I believe it was recently revealed that Ofcam gave the BBC permission to sell the space to someone else (even for multiple SD services rather than an HD service if desired, although these SD services would only be viewable by Freeview HD boxes, creating confusion). So at this point, we don't know what the new channel will be. The space is available now and Ofcom originally expected it to come online after the London DSO in April but it might not appear now until September.

No, most of the space being freed up will be used for other services, like 4G mobile. Like I said there's probably space for an extra 2 or 3 multiplexes but whether they use them, or when, is another question. Surely there will be another HD multiplex at some point but it could be years away.

Thank you for your detailed and informative reply

Disappointing that there isnt going to be a new HD channel particularly soon (well I cant see BBC 2 HD being that different from the current BBC HD), was kinda hoping Watch and a few others might appear on freeview, as Ive seen adverts for some "new" series that look interesting, but looks like I will have to wait awhile longer

thanks again:)

A reminder that tomorrow is stage two (final part) of the digital switchover and all viewers will then need to install or retune Freeview TVs and boxes (including BT Vision or Top Up TV).

Traditionally the two formats used are 1080i/25 and 1080p/25 but both are encoded and transmitted as 1080i/25 on cable and satellite. However, Freeview HD allows the transmission of 1080p/25 natively, which increases bit efficiency (and image quality very slightly, depending on your TV's deinterlacer). Look up "MBAFF" for more info! :)
I think you'll find that's 1080i50 and 1080p25 ;)

And MBAFF is there to give you bigger macroblocks in field encoded frames, not for better progressive encoding....
