Hi guys and gals, I need to hire a car for 6 months whilst on a probation period for my new job. Diesel is a must and something like the new Golf GT 140bps would be good ;)

Any ideas as to the best company to use please.

You are joking ?

Why would he be?

I will have to use this vehicle to drive 2-3k miles a month and possibly take customers out etc.

Yea, so what? Cheap diesel does not neccesarily mean smokey horrid old banger.

It's a sound idea, unless you are one of these people who thinks the most important thing about the car is the image in the carpark you get from a bit of perspex that says '56'..

Your going to get problems with a hire car and needing to do that many miles without paying a fortune in additional charges.

Have you actually got any money to put down on a car to buy, or perhaps get a personal loan then sell the car after 6 months, i think you will loose less tbh.

The foxy one has it in one.

What are you expecting to pay per month for a hire car? And as Firestar has said, the mileage will hit your wallet bigstyles.

My new employer will cover costs by paying mileage expenses at a higher rate.
They are based up north and have a deal with a non UK wide company so have asked me to look into hiring myself at my end.
They pay mileage at 40p a mile so a 50mpg diesel works out very cost effective.
Its not my image that matters, it is the companies.

40p a mile working on an average of 3k a month means £1200 quid eek allow 400 a month for fuel (3000/40(allow for a bit of abuse in the mpg) means around 75 gallons of fuel a month

which leaves you a stonking 800 a month for a car,

or a budget of circa 5 grand. buy something at a year old run for 6 months and batter the miles on and then sell it on and take a couple of grand hit

result you score a couple of G's

When you put it that way ............... hmmmm :)

Buy a decent diesel, whip out the dash fuse and rac up the miles, you could even wire in a nice switch :) , sell it for close to what you bourgt it for 6 months later. :D

In all seriousness though, I reckon it would be cheaper to buy then sell than Contract hire for 6 months whether you buy nearly new or not, otherwise they wouldent make any monry doing it for a start!

6 mothe CH will most likeley cost you what? - £2500- £3000 maybe more, whatever car you buy unless its new wont loose that much in 6 months no matter how many miles you do. Hell you could even buy a half decent diesel repmobile for near the cost of the 6 months hire and sell it afterwards. But if you must have a shiney 56 plate....

EDIT - in fact you definetly could - http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WW...category=CARS&channel=CARS&id=200639250860632
Purely an example...
