A mate of mine has just bought a D40, and is after expanding his lens collection (from one!).

He's after a macro lens, and a 200mmish telephoto - for the AF-S fit, is there anything you kids would recommend to do both? Or is he better off, money/versatility wise to plump for 2?

He's been hassling me for days, and I don't know, so help me get him off my back!

Cheers in advance :)

Sigma 150 2.8 Macro is best value for money and is super sharp. Whether the 150mm is long enough for the telephoto work is another question.

A 300mm F4 might work out as a better telephoto option.

If a 200mm is the best range the absolute best lens is the Nikon 200 VR f/2.0, but your mate might need to mortgage his house

Another vouch for the Sigma 150 here, fantastic performance for the money.

Then maybe something like the 70-300VR or 300 f/4 for telephoto work? Or a 70-200 f/2.8 of some sort if he's sure he doesn't need the long end.

Yep, the Siggy 150mm is awsome. That said, If you did want closer to 200mm, then you might consider the Sigma 180mm f/3.5? Costs a hell of a lot, but is closer to your focal length requirement. As for its suitability for telephoto work, you'd have to ask someone that has it already. :)
