I currently use a 1080p Iiyama 25.5" (TN LCD) and am considering replacing it with a 1440p monitor. My PCs main uses are for music creation, graphics creation and gaming (mainly MMO and RPG). In terms of time spent it is mainly gaming, browsing and YouTube watching. What monitors would people recommend that would cover the majority of these uses to some degree? I would not be interested in wide or ultrawide screens or in curved monitors btw. Budget would be anything up to £500. Also big plus if it comes with VESA mount option, Displayport and a decent refresh rate.

Do you want to move to 1440p for the extra sharpness that resolution brings? In that case I'd be looking at a 27" panel.

If you're happy with the sharpness of the image your 1080p display produces then you could go 1440p on a 32" monitor for the extra size.

In terms of panel types, VA has good colour reproduction and the best contrast and black levels outside of an OLED but suffers from 'black smearing' in fast scenes. IPS handles fast motion better so is good for gaming and has good colour reproduction but suffers with washed out blacks and IPS glow.

The Gigabyte models are very good value. I can link to some recommendations based on your answers to the above.
27" for the extra sharpness would be the ideal! Unless a VA came with a flat screen then it seems my options are IPS based. I know many reviews for IPS say that they do not perform so well in dimly lit conditions, a place where my setup is currently situated, however my TN monitor has been perfectly fine.

So i think i have narrowed it down to the following monitors....

MSI 27" MAG274QRF-QD
LG 27" 27GP850P-B
GIGABYTE 27" M27Q V2

The MSI seem to be the best out of this bunch with better contrast than the LG and better than my Iiyama (1000:1) so better for my dimly lit room!

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £377.17 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Both of these are under £200 and worth consideration. You could always send it back within 14 days if you find the VA panel isn't suitable for your needs, but outside of fast paced FPS games it will have better contrast, more dark scene detail and perform better in dimly lit conditions than an IPS panel.
Interesting... The MSi VA is out as it is curved and my preference is for flat especially when working in Cubase and Inkscape. I would be interested in what the colour accuracy is with the AOC. Oddly enough the TN Monitor i currently have is quite fine in the dimly lit room so the MSI IPS should be fine. The LG less so given the reviews i have read...

I missed that the MSI VA was curved.

I have no idea on the AOC. They generally make pretty decent monitors though.

It sounds like you're fairly set on the MSI IPS. It got a recommendation above so go for it.
Heh, my heart was initially set on the LG, however the contrast element of RTings review knocked back my enthusiasm a bit. Gigabyte do an 27" M27Q X which is also a potential contender and i plan on getting some lighting behind the monitor to help mitigate any potential contrast issues! Thank you though for the recommendations. It is always good to get a sense check!

Good choice, for that money it's hard to fault. If you lived nearby I'd calibrate it with my spectro/colorimeter for free just to see how good it is out of the box! ;)

I use my monitor for similar things like you; graphics, music production and gaming. Though I'm using a 32" LG 165Hz 10bit, IPS monitor - I couldn't go back to 27". :)
I'm fairly space constrained desk wise with two Yamaha HS5s also sat on a sturdy desk... Will see how things go when i get this monitor (arriving today apparently)!

So it arrived today and all so far is good! Quite a nice upgrade from a 75hz 1080p TN monitor! Also noticed that the price has gone back up to £299 so glad i did not procrastinate any further!

Only two downsides I could see form the rtings review...

- no USB hub/ports (can add an external hub or 7port PCIe card if it becomes a problem!)
- apparently not great for darkrooms.... my camera is digital so I guess that won't be an issue for me ;)
I tend to game etc in a dimly lit room so it works for my needs, however it depends on what you are used to. Also not having USB is fine with me plus i appreciate the DP to USB C cable so i can hook up my works laptop when working from home!
