Thanks for your replies guys - I'll take a look at the Nokia Lumia 710.
I take your point on board about GPS - but I've just found out the application actually only uses it when a particular point in the progression is passed; so its on and off.

Any models sub £100 you can recommend?

vote for Lumia 710 here. used the sat nav for about 2 hours on a full charge and was left with about 65% battery life. 6 hours might be a push though. surely you could get a car charger though?

the sat nav application is built into the phone and free so no extra cost.

Just a second, what do you mean by that?

Do you have your own application you want to install on the phone or do you want to connect your phone to another device to use as a GPS?
