Hi all,

im in need of your expert advice!

My bro is looking for an av unit/amp and speaker set; he's told me to find him something decent :P

Anyway, im actually quite lost as to what to get. Id like the unit to be able to connect to his 37inch LCD tv (which has only 1 dvi socket in for HD stuff, no hdmi at all, no component!). So the the unit has to have hdmi/component/vga in , as well as being able to allow 5.1 surround too. As his tv doenst have great connectivity, the unit will be the focus of everything video and audio related.

I know people would advise getting separates etc but if there is something that can do the above with 5.1 speakers that would be great.

The av unit and speakers have to basically bring his tv to life cos at the moment connecting anything from his laptop to the xbox 360 is a pain in the backside as cables have to be constantly changed.

Are there any sets/bundles that can offer this? my brother also says he wants wireless rear speakers but i have advised against this.

TIA :)

thanks for the lack of replies guys!

Does the Sony STR DG910 work with a hdmi-dvi adaptor? As mentioned before, the tv only has one dvi socket.

First off, how much budget do you have.
Sounds like you need an amp with video switching built in. Be aware that most don't have scart. For the kit you mention, the laptop will be able to put out DVI and the Xbox (IIRC) a component. Go find a unit with HDMI and component input switching. There's quite a lot around.
If you have a look around you'll be able to find HDMI to DVI cables (or converters), which will solve how to deal with the video connections. What DVI can't process is audio, and for that you'll need to use the Xbox digital output to the AV amp. For the laptop, well it's dependant upon what type of audio connections it has. I've no idea if it'll have a digital output on it. If not, you may wish to include in the AV amp requirements the ability to connect via USB. I believe that some of the newer units have this ability.

Don't ask me for specific models, I know very little about AV kit.

Your not going to get any replies with an attitude like that to be honest.

If you want an all in one kit then go to one of the high street retailers and tell them what you want.

If you want a decent system then let us know a budget and we can give some advice.

Sorry for not getting back to you guys sooner, have just finished working 19 days in a row! He has a budget of £500 (maybe a bit more). i like the look of of the Sony STR DG910, but i have heard that it doesnt work with hdmi-dvi adaptors. Does anybody know if it does? The sony can be had for approx £280. that leaves around £220 for speakers (or maybe up to £250 if i force him)

Are there any good speaker sets for £250?

OK guys i really need some of your expert advice if possible...

the two amps im looking at are the Sony STR DG910 or the Onkyo SR605..... the sony is about £100 less and has an extra HDMI, is the onkyo worth the extra £100 layout? the onkyo has won a host of awards but the sony seems to fit the bill for me and is cheaper...so why is the onkyo rated much more highly? are there any sony 910 owners on this forum? and what are your thoughts on it?

Also for speakers im looking at Mordaunt Short Avant Premieres (approx £279) or the Mordaunt Short Avant Premiere Plus (£400 - £479). Does anybody use any of these sets? they look nice and the premier plus has a more powerful sub (and it looks better).Your opinions on the above would be much appreciated....are there any other good speaker sets in the £250 to £500 range?

i am a noob in this av stuff but just want a decent system with good punch and longevity at an ok price point....

thanks in advance
