Hi Guys

I am currently in 6th Form, studying BTEC IT Practitioners Level 3 (Equivalent to 1, 2, or 3 A-Levels - I'm aiming for 2), and Economics AS/A2 (1 A-Level). I enjoy both of these courses.

But, I have been working in the IT Department on Wednesday's on a voluntary basis to get some experience, and realised that we run a lot of our projects on linux servers, I need to learn how to do things - properly.

Can you recommend me some Linux Courses that I could do in the evenings? And possibly places to try. I have heard good things about the A+/CompTIA (are they the same thing?).

I would ideally like to look at doing a Linux Course, however, I would probably also progress to a Networking course.

Thanks

Well maybe you should look at what you want to get into in IT? Just saying IT is pretty unspecific. I just don't think Linuz would help you much if you end up walking into a Helpdesk role of logging calls to "get in the door" of a company. However, I can thoroughly recommend getting into Linux for more of a "hobbie" and informal learning. For an actual course, it might be better to spend time doing something that will benefit you imediately. Yes the A+ course is ok but to be honest, I dont think it's worth the money. I would only ever do one if a company paid/insisted on it. It can be tedious to go over ancient architecture, but arguably it teaches you how PC's have evolved hence why it goes back over old tech.

Got anywhere I could start to learn? I've got an old machine that I've dumped XP onto to use a fileserver that I can use.

CompTIA do a nuber of courses, A+ is basic hardware config, N+ is basic networking etc.

Good for starting out if you want to be a techie, although A+ is pretty easy if you are familliar with building PC's, I would suggest buying 2nd hand A+ book from an online bookstore that sounds like a jungle, and just reading up and taking the test.

What's the prices for just the test?

Any reading websites to look at would be good also.
