Hey Guys,

I am looking to upgrade my pc as its getting a big sluggish with the latest games (although bad company 2 is very strugglish!). Last year i bumped the memory and I think this year I should bump the graphics.

The current specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ - Socket AM2
6GB DDR2 900MHz Memory -( 2x 1024MB 2 x 2048mb
300GB Serial ATA Hard Drive with 16MB Buffer
512MB nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard

I am looking to spend around the £100 mark and i saw this on this website...

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-142-OK

Do you think its worth it? and am i upgrading the right thing?

Bad company 2 amongst others love quad cores I would upgrade to a quad cpu before the gpu.
4gb of ram 2x2gb is also enough so consider selling that 2x1gb as well so you could get a gtx 460 instead of the 450.

Lot's of great second hand cards to be had too such as a £30 8800gt £40 + 4850 4870 4890

Second hand Q6600 and p35/p45 board could be had for £100 or less no idea about the amd cost and side of things 955 is good though.

i wouldnt go for gtx 450 even if it is cheap, i would say looking at your setup to consider maybe a Gigabyte SOC 460 or maybe got for a 470 which has more gpu memory, either one you will see a major performance, yeah i know you said a budget of £100 but sometime it is wish not to go cheap on a cpu or gpu or psu, as they are the main power of a system.

if you sell your 7900 gtx cant you use that to topup your GPU money????

It's not a big a pain as you might think basically all you would need is a p35/p45 chipset motherboard £30-£45 and a Q6600 £60-£75.

have you considered getting an xbox 360 though ?

As has been said Bad Company 2 loves quad cores. I doubt you would notice much of an improvement if you upgraded your graphics card with you current CPU with that game, other games however may benefit from an upgrade.

When BC2 first came out I realized this and bought a second hand AM2+ and a Phenom 2 550 (dual core) which could be unlocked to a quad. Total cost 100 pound as I was able to use the RAM from my previous system.

That is a good idea but i think i would only get a few quid for it looking at ebay :(

true but every penny counts, or just keep that card as a backup who know when you might been to rma a graphic, or someone asked you for one, i sold my 7900 a while back for £50 which was a backup card for myself a couple of money, you never know, you might find someone crazy enough to buy your card on that site, i was shocked to see my sell...

I have one, but i much prefer FPS games on the PC

I stuck to the question at hand, some people clearly didn't.
Best card for under £100 is 5770 Ati.

But if u think that buying just one item at the time will transform ur system ur mistaken. If u want a "difference" throw ur 2007 computer away and start fresh.

He also asked if the money would be better spent elsewhere which it would be.
bad company 2 will be just as choppy on a 5770 it needs a quad core.

Not sure if u guys have noticed but his board is an AM2+ board that supports all athlon II x3s, Phenom II 555BE, Phenom II x3s, Phenom II x4 925/945.

I guess a cheap x3 435 will be the best choice here, at 3.2ghz + it will easily eat through anything for now and cost you not more than around 30quid after selling your current CPU.

If you can get a second hand phenom II x3 or 555BE for around 40-60quid then this will be a good choice too.

Regarding the card, best value for budget would be a 2nd hand 4850/4870 at around 30-45 mark.
As for buying a new card, I'd wait around a month and see if 5xx / 69xx comes out. Prices should drop then and you should be able to get a 6850 at around 120-130 which would be a very good buy. The current ¬100 mark cards offer poor performance for the price they cost.

Eventually, a 2nd hand 5770 for around 70quid wouldn't be too bad either.

Yea I can tell you from personal experience that all my bad company 2 sluggish choppiness went out the window when I got a quad core.

Was choppy on 6420@ 3.4 ghz 5770
Was smooth on [email protected] with 5770

X3 + second hand 5770/4850/4870 would be a very decent boost just comes down to what you are willing to outlay.

A 4870 is as fast as a 5770 in most things a bargain if you can bag one for £40-£45.

But If I am outlaying £100 ish I'd still rather get a (second hand) 955 + board or Q6600 + board which is doable for £100.
And just live with that until I can afford another £30-£50 for a GPU.

I would look at getting something like an abit ip35 pro motherboard £20-£30 and £70 for q6600.

It's just a shame you are new to here and cant access the members market yet but other second hand places do get similar prices sometimes.
