I've got a Chrysler PT cruiser and im having problems with the front passenger side tyre and wondered if somebody could give me some advice.

Basically, when i got the car back in January i noticed that i was loosing tyre pressure quite quickly so i took it to the local tyre garage who said the valve was at fault - they replaced it which made little or no difference. I took it back and they took the tyre off. Upon inspection, they noticed that it had a old puncture which had been repaired with a patch. They said it was probably leaking. So i replaced the tyre. This made quite a large difference but im still loosing about 10psi / month. It's really irritating me. What else could be causing it ?

Any help appreciated.

I have had a problem with alloys corroding around the rim, this stopped the tyre sealing correctly and went down slowly over time..

Yep alloy corrosion is the only likely suspect if the tyre is sound. And when I say corrosion you usually don't see it. on both my ford mondeos with 12 spoke alloys, the alloys were sound visually on the outside but flaky and powdery on the inside. You need to make sure when they change the tyre that they give the rim a really good brushing with a wire brush to get any flakiness/powder off. they can also paint on a bitumen sealant compound to the inner rim which helps the tyre make a better seal.

try this, Super Guard Tyre Sealant for Punctures
i got some from QVC the shopping channel(its in carcare)
i had the same problem as you and it sorted it.
its not a temp get u home fix for punctures it a permanent seal
i have used it for years and it works great

Are they that incompetent they can tell where it's leaking

The mind boggles at how bad your garage is. :p

What he said basically but make sure they also remove and wire brush around the valve as well.

Sounds like they stiffed you for a tyre by the way, the ago old we dont know/cant be bother to fix it so lets flog a new one.

ps.did they check the valve core was leaking? if not take the cap off and put a little spit onto the valve and see if you can see it bubbling.

i had this on one of my alloys, but it was 15 years old and the lacquer had started to flake off...

is it a common issue for new(er) cars too?

In the mean time get a tin of that squirt-in puncture repair from Halfords or your local motorfactors which will fill the holes and stop it leaking. You should find it'll be fine for the life of the tyre and they can clean the wheel up when you buy new tyres.

Both my our mondeos are 98's so no not new but far from 15year old

I always cleaned the rim of any alloy more than a few years old. Obviously some got worse quicker than others but 5 years plus pretty much would always need a clean round the rim and some sealant.

Problem with that is it can negate the possibility of a puncture repair in the future.
