M4 firmware 0309 is now available

No, not happy. Just pleasantly surprised it was dealt with quickly and effectively.

Sad really, isn't it?

2012 and here we are embroiled in the distinctly 1st world discussion about of a bug fix for an SSD. All this while children are dying to starvation, war, poverty, etc. So, an imperfect object created by imperfect beings in an imperfect world. Hardly shocking, sadly, but at least a little more refined than it was.

My M4 128gb has just arrived. On it it says

Firmware Rev - 0009

Is this the same as 0309?

edit - I have been on the Crucial site and see its not. I will set AHCI mode and update the firmware before re-installing tonight

For best performance it should be running AHCI already. You may find that you need to switch to IDE mode for the update, and make sure its on one of SATA ports 0-3 as well. The update process is meant to be non destructive to data, but its probably still worth backing up before hand. If it goes normally though you wont need to re-install anything.

Thanks. Shall I set ACHI mode in bios before the frimware update or after? Should I leave this on all the time after too or turn back to normal mode

Without a registry hack, changing from AHCI to IDE and vice versa would need a format.

The drive is new, sat on my desk in front of me

Take home
download firmware update to USB (make bootable somehow - I have yet to find out)
Fit in machine in SATA port 0
Go into bios and set AHCI
Run firmware update
Reboot
Install Windows etc

Should be fine doing it like that, leave it in AHCI mode for best performance.

I ran from usb stick and did the firmware update. For me it detects it in AHCI or SATA.

I also set 'SATA Port 0-3 Native mode' as enabled. When it was disabled there was a few random stalls and I had to close Office 2010 from task manager, then it would not uninstall. Also my Xonar Essence soundcard drivers stalled and i had to reboot.

I formatted and re-installed with Native mode enabled

Put it in AHCI mode and never change it from that. (unless a firmware update says you need it in IDE mode)

Install Windows in AHCI mode, if you didn't, then turn AHCI mode on, and reformat.

I installed in ahci the first time but native mode was disabled. This caused problems (at least i think it was because native mode was disabled)

I am now running in native and ahci and all is fine. Think i just need to upgrade my intel ahci drivers though

". This firmware resolves the issue where a m4 SSD required restarts after approximately 5,000 hours of actual “on time” use. " - who here would leave their PC on for 5000 hours continuously? Im not gonna bother with this firmware upgrade if that's all it upgrades.
