Mac vs PC, is there any difference apart from the OS?

Ever heard of anti-virus software?

I don't use a Mac because I don't want to look like a pretentious t***. Plus I like to game!

Sure av will stop everything, hope you don't live by that.. Most of us are fine, we know how to care for our wild little friend windows, since we love what it can give us, games, 99.5% of apps, free hardware choices etc etc

But think if we had any good unix system with such power as windows now, it would solve a ton of problems. Ok unix systems are still insecure, but at least if you do get into them you have another layer get through, standard user -> root which is trivial if the user is not running the most up to date kernel.. Where as most windows system have no where near that layer security..

Cba I am just typing, macs are cool for xbox fags..

Since Macs have adopted Intel processors I wouldn't have thought there's anything in it apart from prestige and a nice apple shaped logo which glows in the dark. Prior to the switch to Intel it could be argued the processors were geared towards the types of application you'd expect to run on Macs (lots of render intensive stuff).

My other half worked in an architects using 3DMax and CAD/ADT and they all used PCs.

I have toyed with the idea of getting a Mac Book just for my web design stuff - might look better when meeting clients :)

Get a ThinkPad, it looks more professional.

I'm happy to pay for it

rubbish ! my favorite mac myth infact

im typing on a mac now and have a new iphone next to me but i can never agree with that

my macbook with applecare breaks and i have to post it across the country or drive it to my nearest apple shop (an hour away)

if a dell with their care equivalent breaks someone comes to your house with a van full of spare parts and screwdriver set !

you get half decent customer service yes. but only because you pay for it. you get exactly the same and sometimes better from any other big laptop or pc manufacturer

I travel a lot and love the fact that I can be abroad and if I have an issue with my product I can walk into any apple store anywhere in the world and get assistance.

You cannot get that from Dell.

If you're running a business, things like this are very important.

That ain't a Mac

I made my parents a hackingtosh because their friend was raving about her Mac and it increased support calls if anything. "Why can't I do this, why can't I load that, why is this webcam we bought in Aldi not working". They are back on Windows now.

It's a cobbled-together hackintosh and therefor a third category of machine irrelevant to the question.

Macs are aimed at people who know nothing about computing and therefore get ripped off. OVERALL PCs are better no argument, lets be honest.

Yes, quite  narrow-minded much?

Its pretty much the only unix system used in the main stream and the whole thing costs a ton, got to admire apple doing what they do, still think if they opened it up to all hardware and got big programs to run on it, they would be in a much better position than ripping "cool people" off...

Jeeez, I can't stand people that like macs, such stupid posers.. Nearly as bad as the people getting excited about the "new" MW : xxbleh

A) It works so well BECAUSE it's on a set of hardware, if I wanted it to be installed on anything I want, i'd use Windows.

B) And it's nothing to do with "ripping cool people off". Uncool people also buy them to do what a computer is suppose to. Get the bloody job done.

I'm assuming your not tarnishing all the mac users with the same brush?

Just to confirm my credentials on the use of both systems before people jump on me for being a mac-fanboy or something equally ridiculous.

1. I am an 'advanced' user, I build, configure and overclock hardware. I owned a DFI SLi-DR FFS.
2. I use XP, OS X and W7 on a daily basis and have done for YEARS. I have it installed on my Mac Pro to run CAD, CFD and Matlab.
